Imac G4 700mhz w/Tiger 10.4.. Do I need to emulate?

Hi People,
Please excuse my ignorance, I'm new to mac, but I recent got a Imac G4 M6498 with 700mhz, Tiger 10.4, 40gig HD and 384mb memory.. and I'd like to make use of it.
From browsing your site I see references going up to around 9.0, and it's kind of unclear to me if I am required to run an emulator or not to play these games on my G4.

I download a couple games, but have not installed any yet (I dont have internet access on the Imac.) I thus far just downloaded them using my pc and plan to burn them to a cd to transfer them to the mac.

Anyway... Question is; Is installing an emulator really required for me to run the games here on my G4 since it's such an old machine as it is?!

Thanks for any response, and I think this is a cool site you have here. I like old games!

If you have a Mac OS 9 System Folder, you can run a lot of these games on Tiger using Classic Mode, and you can also boot into OS 9.2.2 on that model. Sheepshaver emulation is also an option, though it's not very stable.

If you have an actual Mac, you do not need an emulator. If you want to emulate older B&W Mac games, there is a version of vMac (mini-vMac) that allows for this. Also, there is a PC version of vMac that emulates the MacFX II (256 colours).

There are also good emulators out there, and you have Rosetta support in 10.4.x (running 68k software on PPC).

So this is just a big free software store for you now Smile

PS. DO NOT DECOMPRESS ANYTHING BEFORE TRANSFERRING TO THE MAC. You will lose vital file information that will make it very difficult/impossible to use the software. Install a copy of Stuffit Expander under OS X and possibly MacOS 9 (there is a folder install here somewhere) Wink and you are ready for some old school games and software!

@tmm: hi just a FYI, there are versions of Mini vMac of the Mac II that also are available for PPC Mac. I run it on my iBook G4 under OS 10.4.11, I'm using 8bit, 16bit & 24bit (display) versions. There are others to use also, but those 3 suit my needs. I also run Basilisk II on this PPC.

The Mini vMac variations are kind of hard to locate, you have to dig around, but they're there. Some are on this page here, any with the word "mach" in the DL file name are for PPC OS X.

Please don't mix.
Running 68k software is meant for PowerPC running up to Mac OS 9 (plus Classic Environment) , and build into the processor type.
Rosetta enables you to run Mac OS X PowerPC software on Intel based Macs up to the Mac OS X 10.6 version.

You should be able to run/install 9.2.2 on your iMac. That will allow you to run some games in "classic" mode (booted in Tiger but running OS9) or you can boot into 9.2.2. There are a few old games that won't save games properly with 9.2.2. So you might want to run Basilisk and 7.5.5.
Are you sure there isn't a "System Folder" on your HD? 9.2.2 would have been preinstalled on the machine originally. I just happen to get an iMac 9.2.2 disk. Somebody was trying to install it on a Wallstreet I got from ebay... Wrong!
