Installation of Things on A Real Macintosh?

Hey Guys, I recently got ahold of a Powerbook G3 (Bronze Keyboard, aka 'Lombard') 400mhz model -- http://lowendmac.com/pb2/lombard-powerbook-g3.html

I'm looking to install Mac OS 9 on it, eventually---- Mac OS X has problems with this model, in relation to the DVD Drive---that I'd like to keep that DVD drive working. (This is according to lowendmac.com.)

I know how installation of .sit file works---since those are just expandable archives, but how do I use .img, and .toast files to install things? or .bin files on the old machine?

I would like to add, the only computers I have access to otherwise are PC/non-Macs, though the PC does have a DVD-Writer.

Thanks for any help!

I had one of these, OS8.6 and OS9 and early OSX run great on it, and there's a ton of those early iMac games run great on it too.

You could try burning a suitable OS9 toast disc image to CD in Windows.

Which OS do you have on it now ?

Would your budget extend to an external CD/DVD burner for the Mac, FireWire / USB would be good, because a USB drive would only operate at USBv1 speeds. Painfully slow, burning CD's at no more than 2x or 4x. Burning a DVD would be painful.

Alright I guess I'm missing some context.

I already know how to get Mac OS 9 on it! (At the moment, I am not sure what it has on it, because I am waiting on a power supply to arrive for it-----I was told it worked when he last used it by the former owner, and that he didn't change or upgrade anything on it....if that's true...then it has some iteration of Mac OS 8 on it as of now.).

I've been there, done that, with a B&W Before. ;P

What I wanna know is what I would use to mount disk images of varying types. I know DiskCopy will work for certain disc images, but I remember certain types of images that wouldn't mount for me in OS 9.

I would DL 9.2.1 from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?35bxg8bwe22xb
Expand on Windows with 7Zip and burn to disk with ImgBurn (also Windows).
That way you should obtain a bootable iBook CD, if the links are not down.

Toast can mount many: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/toast-5-titanium
and so can http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/virtual-dvd-romcd-utility .
Fore some antique files ShrinkWrap might do: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/shrinkwrap

aha, first the golfen rule, lock disk images before you mount them. Then,

Toast, available here, will mount almost everything.

DiskCopy will mount evetything, except, maybe, bin/cue.

For .dmg files in OS9, Disk Copy v6.4 and v6.5, available here, can mount the uncompressed, unencrypted images.
