Sheepy has 8.5 in his archive together with the German version copied from you know where
.

The image should do for you until you find CZ. Upgrading to 8.6 should be easy enough.
Well I found these archives, but I just CANT figure out how to join them.
Do you think it would be possible to install English, and upgrade Czech?
I´ll have a look at the files, if (how) I can join them.
What kind of host system are you using BTW?
For me it was impossible to upgrade a international OS to a localized one.
The installer/upgrader simply refused to work. There may be hacks to fool it, though.
I think it will not work, upgrading english to czech. I dont mind the menus beeing in english but the character support in web browsers, I remeber I had problems with that.
Anyway, I will instlall it on PowerBook 5300cs 100Mhz, 24Mb ram. I know it isnt a lot of RAM, but I need Os 8.6 for the drivers to my Wifi and other stuff.
Joining segments and inflating does work with newer versions of Stuffit in OSX or with Stuffit 5 (SheepShaver, OS8.6).
For Stuffit with the Classic OS, creator and file IDs have to be restored with MiniConversion or alike, as file IDs got lost in storage.
The segment´s IDs must be changed to Type: "Seg1", "Seg2", "Seg3", and Creator: "SIT!" accordingly.
These are the files you should get after inflating the joined file:
Mac OS 8.5 691-2162-A Mac.txt
Mac OS 8.5 691-2162-A toast.iso
Mac OS 8.5 691-2162-A UNIX.txt
Mac OS 8.5 691-2162-A Win.txt
Mac OS 8.5 691-2162-A.jpg
Mac OS 8.5 691-2162-A.pict
24bit thanks so much! I tried unpacking with new Stuffit in OsX but it didnt work. So the file should look something like this?: "Mac_Os_8_5.sit.seg1" ???
Anyway, would you please share the system folder (and all the other necessary stuff) of 8.6 somwhere???
Because after trying 3 different install CDs I have a feeling that the interuption in installation might be caused by the Hard Drive which is a 1GB Compact Flash.
Thanks
Creator and File ID are used in Mac OS up to OS9. Anytime the IDs get lost, files are useless, as the OS does not know what to do with them or which programm they are assigned to.
This is why the IDs have to be restored, if you want to make use of Stuffit5.
The File IDs have nothing to do with the file name, but are stored in the file´s Resource Fork.
There are a couple of apps around for handling the IDs in the Classic OS. http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/creator-changer-284-0 is one of them.
In OSX the splitted files from MF should be joined and inflated with Stuffit10 without issues.
CF media can break, just like any other (USB) devices.
Best verify first, whether your CDs are good, before investing more time in a probably obsolete search. Are your disks retail installers or did they come for a special type of Macintosh?
I just cant install Mac Os 8, on this powerbook with CF. It seems that the CF has to be mounted as a normal drive (not the removable drive) for it to work.
How would you install Os 8 onto a powerbook with no CD rom?
How would you install Os 8 onto a powerbook with no CD rom?
Install the OS you want to use (probably choosing a universal install) onto the CF card via your b/w G3.
Mount the CF card onto the 5300 already running whatever OS it boots up to. Move the 5300's active System Folder to the Trash. Copy the installed new OS files/folders from the CF card to the 5300 and the new installed System Folder to where the active System folder previously occupied.
[Important] Open the newly moved 8.x System folder by double clicking its icon. Look for the System file inside. Double click the System file to open it. (This "blesses" the new system and makes it bootable).
Restart the 5300. If it boots up, great. Move the old System Folder back out of the Trash to some other folder and rename it to "Old System Folder" or something similar. There will probably 3rd party Control Panels & Extensions & Fonts you will likely want to recover and reuse from it.
[Warning] As your 5300 does not have a CD drive, I'm assuming/hoping it has a floppy drive with a bootable "Disk Tools" floppy that you can boot up to and move the working System Folder from the Trash back to where it needs to be, should the above go wrong and fail.
Also: The above is probably the 1st thing I would try. I also have an alternative "method" to install 8.5 to the 5300, should the above fail outright. It doesn't require purchasing extra hardware, but it does require a working floppy drive.
Personally, I would take out the HDD and would install the desired OS with a USB to ATA adapter and aother Mac.
An optical SCSI would be fine too, but I dont know, if the 30pin cable is available easily.
Can you hack a ATA optical to the PB´s controller maybe?
24bit, damn good thinking! It is possible to atach ATA optical to PBs controller. But I guess I dont have good interconnectors.
The PowerBook has a CF card instead of hard drive, if you get my point.
I have been trying to install onto the CF with my b&w G3, and Im starting to suspect its optical drive is somehow faulty. It reads CDs ok, but I just cant boot of 8.5 or even 9.2.
I will try to replace that and report back.
MikeTomTom, thanks for reply. In ideal world it would work as you wrote, in reality I have been strugling for days.
First of all:
The B&W G3 is Rev A. That means the IDE controller can only do, one ATAPI and one ATA. That complicates things.
I suspect the Combo CD/DVD drive is broken somehow. I doubt the 4 Os 8.5 or 8.6 discs I have are broken.
Tell me the alternate method please.
I really didnt know about the double click system folder trick.
Tell me the alternate method please.
For your 5300 this requires a bootable "Disk Tools" floppy disk. Any version capable of booting the 5300 should do.
On the 5300, make a copy of a working "Disk Tools" floppy disk and "customize it" by removing the utility apps to free up some space on the floppy. If there is enough room on the floppy, add the drivers to mount the CF card, to the System Folder's Control Panels or Extensions folders. Test it by booting up the 5300 with the boot floppy and attempt mounting the CF card.
On your b/w G3 copy all of the files required to install 8.5, directly to your CF card.
Boot up the 5300 from the customized floppy and then mount the CF card. Run the installer for 8.5 and perform a fresh full install (not update) to the 5300's hard drive.
If for some reason you cannot run the installer from the CF card. Reboot from the normal 5300 hard drive, mount the CF card and copy the contents of the install set to a folder on the hard drive. Reboot from the floppy drive and install from the folder on the hard drive instead.
I will try your method MikeTomTom. I have to work out something. I want to install 8.6 CZ which I have but... we will see, probably broken CD/DVD drive
You can download the Czech 7.5.2 for your PowerBook 5300 here and extract the Disk Tools image:
