Mac OS 9 installer for iMac G3 Rev. D

Hello anyone,

I'm looking for software to downgrade a 333 MHz iMac G3 (strawberry) from Mac OS X 10.3.9 to Mac OS 9. I could only try update CDs so far, which of course did not help because the installer file needs a Classic OS itself.

Maybe a System Recovery CD could help?

Please also note that I can't uninstall OS X because the iMac wouldn't read the Panther CD. (I got it as a copied disc when I bought the iMac.)

I hope someone can help me.

Thanks in advance,
Connor

Have a look here:

You should find a working OS 9 CD there.
If you search the net a bit more you should also find OS X CDs/DVDs...

The rev D came with Mac OS 8.5.1 so you should be able to use any OS 9 cd. Some won't be bootable, like Mac OS 9.2.2 installers. They were designed to be installed from within Mac OS X.

As a note to the comment above: depending of the era of your mac you would receive a full MacOS 9.2.x install CD, or a restore cd with a pkg file that installs OS9, along with your OSX disc. Back in the day when i bought my powerbook titanium it came with two system disks, one with OS 9.2.2 and another with OSX 10.1. The 9.2.2 CD boots and installs without the need of OS X. In fact the disk seems unlocked, the CD installs in a variety of models without the usual "model restricition" which was becoming very common on those days. I can almost bet we have 9.2.2 bootable images here.
