Mac OS 9.2.2 remote access won't open

I want to connect my eMac to dialup internet due to the Ethernet port being busted and not having an airport card. However whenever I try opening the remote access or dial up control panel, I get this error which states that it requires the system extension opentpt remote access but it was not found. However it was clearly installed in the extensions folder. I then uninstalled it then reinstalled it but I still ended up with the same error again and again. Can someone please tell me what's going on?

Here's the exact error I'm getting ^

possibly a carbonlib version error. Check your carbonlib version, and make sure you have all the serial libs.

Do you have the correct modem extension installed? There are multiple internal modem files, which all sound like the correct one. Do some online research, and find out the one you need. Reinstall from 9.2.2 media, and do a custom install of Remote Access/TCP-IP and select ONLY the modem file you need to work.

Internal modem scripts for OpenTransport here http://www.taniwha.org.uk/ (up to late 2001 Macs). Ones after that are internal USB?!

Have you turned off Ethernet as the connection port in the TCP/IP and AppleTalk Control Panels and chosen to connect to a modem in the AppleTalk CP and Remote Access in the TCP/IP CP?

Aside from your issues here. Have you considered using FreePPP instead of Remote Access?

FreePPP was widely used back in the classic Mac era before OS X, instead of MacPPP/Remote Access

Some background on FreePPP
Nice walk-through here for setting it up (your details & ISP name server settings will differ).
One DL for FreePPP 2.6.2 that appears to be working still.

FreePPP should probably be archived here at the Garden too. [Edit] It's now here at the MG.

I used FreePPP 2.5+ exclusively, and I was never disappointed.

I thought Apple's implementation of dialup PPP to be very clunky and non-intuitive.

There are many anecdotal references to these modems "flaking-out" or simply not working.

If you have some alan keys, or the requisite driver, you can open the case (there are good guides available on the net) and remove and re-seat the modem card. I hear that this works more often than not Smile

Best of luck!

Alright thanks. I'm using FreePPP now because AppleTalk refused to switch from Ethernet for some odd reason, it either gave me an error -3 or anything else. FreePPP is rather simple and it just saved me from pulling my hair out :3
