QuickTake requires more system memory...

Hello,

I've fallen at the last hurdle trying to get together a laptop (PowerBook G3 Lombard) which can run a QuickTake 100 camera. I've got everything setup but can't seem to launch the QuickTake software application.

The extensions seem to be installed and running but I get this error message upon starting the app.

"QuickTake requires more system memory than is currently available. Close any other applications and try again.

I've tried upping the memory using the inspector on the application, but no luck.

Is there anything else that should be tried? I'm running OS 9.2.2 which might be too new but is the only system install disc I have, and can't seem to burn a disc that will be read (possibly the CD-R I burnt to is too fast?!?!)

Anyway any suggestions more than welcome, and if you have QuickTake running in OS9 please let me know, so I at least know its possible!

Thanks,

James Smile

UPDATE: I have downloaded and installed OS 8.6 using the PowerBook G3 Series installer from here.

Still no luck and the same error. D'oh!

Since the message is about "System Memory" you need to do an "About This Mac" and check the amount of free system memory. The amount allocated for the app in the Get Info window cannot be more than the free system memory. I would try with both virtual memory on and off and see if you get different error message.

How are you planning to interface the camera? I though the Quicktake used the modem/printer port. A Lombard doesn't have one - just a standard phone jack for the internal modem. You would need the previous G3 model - the Wallstreet to have a modem/printer/serial port.

Hi, thanks I will double check the system memory, but I think there was over 100mb free. I've tried virtual memory off/on too.

So I bought the Lombard by slight mistake, descriptions mentioned additional USB ports, not USB taking place of the needed serial. I have since got hold of a USB to serial which might work, the camera seems to interface and know it's connected to the Lombard, just failing at launching the QuickTake software!

I've been tinkering adjust ram/extension etc with no luck though, so bit frustrating, but that's half the fun! Right?

Thanks the reply and anymore suggestions welcome.

PS software fails to launch with or without the USB to serial installed or connected. I've checked and the software should launch with or without the camera attached. Smile

PPS I would be thankful of anyone willing to install the QuickTake software for the 100 model under a PPC and giving me the outcome if it loads or not in your given OS version and if you adjusted anything.

You could install the QuickTake 150 software instead, as it is 100% backwards compatible with the QuickTake 100 and offers newer drivers.

You may fare better with upgraded drivers. It also has a decent photo editor that's not included with the QT 100 software.

Still no luck with the 150 installation. I've got access to the "QuickTake Image Access" now but have the clock thinking cursor when trying to connect.

The strange side effect of then force quitting (that you need to because nothing happens) is that I can then open the QuickTake 100 software without any errors. Only to then be told that it can not access the camera and to close any application that may be using it and try again.

The quest continues..

Hi,

Tried QT100 on my Pismo under 9.2.2 - no go - same error as you.
However it opens fine under both 8.6 and 9.2.2 with my G3 Wallstreet (384MB RAM).

So I wonder if the problem is the lack of a true internal serial port on the Lombard.

I have a Wallstreet I (250MHz - single LCD res of 1024x768) you could have for shipping if you're in the USA.

I too think that this would have to be the issue. I also can't see this driver software accessing USB to serial, given its age.

Quite a good article here on the QT 100. Its author came to much the same conclusion re connection & drivers:

The QuickTake 100 has a simple RS-232 connector, and needs to connect to a serial port on the other end. That leaves both of my Macs out of the picture (no pun intended). A serial to USB adapter wouldn't work...

Hello!

So after a lot of time patience and eBay'ing I have finally got my 8 photos off of my QuickTake 100, in the end it came down to a fresh install of Mac OS8 using original discs as burned ones could not be read on my trusty old Power Macintosh 5500/275 directors edition and then installing the QuickTake 100 software and using the true port.

Here is a photo from the camera!

If anyone based in the UK would like to swap a Lombard PowerBook G3 in a non excellent condition for a WallStreet PowerBook G3 please let me know! I promise never to not read the specs in detail when buying an old mac again.

Where about are you in the UK? I have a Wallstreet machine I'm happy to let go of - OS9, 256MB memory IIRC, and the 12" passive matrix LCD. It weighs quite a lot though, so postage would probably be quite expensive. I'm in Guildford, by the way.

WOW! Harrymatic that is incredibly kind. I'm in Streatham Hill and don't have car. I can however get trains and I cycle a lot, so I'm super happy to come and collect the machine in the new year if that is good for you?

Amazing!

That's fine with me - although just to let you know, I'm going to be in Brighton from the 4th onwards. Send me a message nearer the time and we'll work something out.
