I've had problems downloading games from this site and getting them to function on my Macintosh Classic. As for system specs, it's running Mac OS 7.1, has 4MB of RAM, a 40MB harddrive, and has PC Exchange and Stuffit version 4.0.1.
I have gotten two programs to work, Police Quest and Shufflepuck Cafe. Any idea about what's going wrong?

All of them, except for Police Quest and Shufflepuck Cafe.
Winter Games doesn't run in vMac.
If you have other PC or Mac, Try FIRST to Unstuff them using your alternate Machines
whether using an Emulator or a real Mac with Stuffit 5.5,
once you have the game or App folder (unstuffed) just transfer them to your Mac Classic,
That's what I do, I unstuff them using Emulator running 7.6, and then I transfer them
to Mac Classic running System 6.3,
Using Stuff it 4.1 within System 6 most of the times don't work for me,
that's why I do the other method and it works.
Should I use Basilisk II? Mini vMac says Stuffit 5.5 needs 8000K of physical memory, which the system apparently doesn't have.
I use SoftMac emulator cuz it has the advantage to mount several Disk images
(unlike vMac)
But it can be done using Basilisk, just add the drive with System 6 that you'll be using for Mac classic, (the drive will appear as an extra Drive within Basilisk) before starting up Basilisk and just Unstuff them and transfer/copy the files from there onto the disk Image containing Sys 6 or 7.
Shut down Basilisk and start mini vMac with the files already opened and ready.

No. It's for Mac OS 7 and up. StuffIt 4 was the last version compatible with System 6 and the one that should always be used for compressing black & white games.

Where can I find a download of Stuffit 4? I upgraded my Classic and forgot where I downloaded the original.
It's on the StuffIt Deluxe page, but as ironic as this sounds, you need StuffIt 5.5 and Mac OS 7 to decode it.

What's weird is that it's only this sites .sit files that don't work for me. .sea files work fine, and .sit files from other sites unstuff on the first try.
Okay, I got a Performa 6230CD with Mac OS 7.5, and Stuffit 5.5. It gives me the same error, but also tells me I can update. If I find Stuffit 6 or 7, can I use it if I copy it to a CD?

You can burn them to a CD, but you can't use them on Mac OS 7. StuffIt 6 requires Mac OS 8.1 at least and StuffIt 7, Mac OS 8.6.
The problem with all these files must be that they were stuffed in Mac OS X. They say that if you uncheck an option the files are Classic-compatible, but they're not. I bet that's why only this sites .sit files don't work for you. They must be re-encoded... I'm so

So am I, especially since I can get some games to work, not others. Any way to re-encode them?
What I do is that I download the problematic file, decompress it with StuffIt Expander 5.5, turn its contents into a Disk Copy 4.x image with ShrinkWrap, convert that image into a DiskDup+ image with the homonimous program and test that other image with vMac. If everything's all right, I zip it with MacZip and upload it, replacing the old file. It's easy but boring, so I intent to convert all System 6 images little by little.
The problem is that the programs I'm having problems with don't unstuff at all. Maybe I'm using a bad download or something.

You did, not with those words but you did. The problem is that you're using StuffIt Expander 4 and these are version 5 files, which are not backward-compatible. Then again, that's not the real problem. The actual problem is that they're supposed to be version 4 files.
If you can do a list of games you want to see converted first, post it and I'll take care of that, because right now I don't know where to start.
I'm using version 5.5 on both my 68k Mac Classic and my 68k PPC Performa 6320. But if you want a list:

Weird, it still doesn't work, it gives me an error when I try to unzip the file to get the .sit file. Other times it gives me a .IMG file, which I can't do anything with.

My bad. I thought you were familiar with Macintosh files. Here is what you need to know:
The hqx files contain Disk Copy images, not sit archives. You can't unzip them. You use an application like StuffIt Expander to decode them. But because Disk Copy images depend on something called resource fork and only Mac OS can handle it, you can't decode them on Windows or the Disk Copy images will be damaged forever. So, decode on your Performa and double-click on the resulting Disk Copy images and off you go.

I'm not really sure how to use Disk Copy, it asks me to make a master disk, not to convert a file.
Are you using Disk Copy 4.2? Try Disk Copy 6.3.3 instead.
Edit: You can also use Shrinkwrap.
Shrinkwrap doesn't unstuff, and I can't fit Disk Copy on a floppy, and CDs aren't working for me.

I think I got it! You're going to play these games on your Performa and not in an emulator, right? In that case I can put them into self-mounting images, wrap them in BinHex and then mail them to you. Once you decode the BinHex file, just double click on the .sea files and they'll mount themselves out. No Disk Copy needed! Send me your email address at raul...@gmail.com.
PS The reason I won't upload them here is that self-mounting images might be compressed and emulators can't handle compressed images. Better safe than sorry.

In a second way. Real old Macintoshes like your Macintosh Classic, my PowerBook G3 Pismo are rarely today. Usually our files are .sit or .img.sit, such files should be runable on real Macintoshes, too.
But since Mac OS 6 can't handle Disk Copy 6.3 or its Disk images, there would be a problem on real ones, because most of our b/w games has been stuffed with Stuffit 5 which isn't compatible to System 6.
To mount Disk Copy 6.3 images within vMac, just drag them onto the Mini-vMac application icon or onto its window.
