macopener by dataviz for windows 3.1 / 95 / NT for reading 1.44mb mac formatted floppies

hey there guys
i have some driver disks for mac that i need to get the files off of
but i dont have a mac with a floppy drive
but i have a windows 3.11 computer with a floppy

does anyone have this app so i can get my software off ?
does anyone have experience creating disk images frm mac formatted 1.44mb floppies on a pc?

heres the manual from a newer version updated for xp compatibility
http://download.dataviz.com/pdf/quickstartbooklets/mo_gsmanual.pdf

MacOpener 2000 seems to be for Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0 and 2000
but macOpener v2 and v3 versions are still compatible with windows 3.1/3.11
i think macOpener v4 is only win95+ but im not sure

i read that this software was abandoned + Discontinued by dataviz in 2007 they have an article on their site claiming this and they direct everyone to use a different app called macdrive which will work with newer windows vista/7 + etc

Did you already try HFV Explorer?

A Windows 3.1 rig should be perfect for setting up FusionPC: http://www.emulators.com/freefile/FUSION30.ZIP
With Fusion you can create disk images of your floppies just as it was done with a real 68k Mac.

I may have some bootable disk images for fusion in storage.
Let me know, if you need any. Smile

so.. does this run under dos/win3.11? or its an os u boot into off a live cd? or something?

http://www.emulators.com/fusion.htm

the machine i have the floppy on is a slot-1 pentium III 700mhz, Abit Motherboard "BE6" /w intel 440bx chipset, 256mb ram, maxtor 20gb hard drive (partitioned to 2gb PRI DOS, formatted as FAT16) sony cd-rw, 1.44mb floppy Wink

but yes, im asking here because i know that i read somewhere on this site that u guys convert disks to disk images somehow... i dont know anything about it or how its done, but i dont have a mac with a floppy, i may just have to get a usb floppy and connect it to mac os 8.6 or 9.2 to do this.. would be alot easier..
if someone could point me at the right info to get these drivers off these floppies..
i really need to get this accomplished.

Your P-III 700 is just perfect for Fusion30!
I am running Fusion from Win98SE occasionally on my Asus P-III. For me Fusion is the most compatible Mac 68k emulator ever. Too bad it was never ported to a more recent OS.

Fusion runs from DOS or from a DOS window in WIN3/9X just the same, the DOS window saves you from configuring mouse and sound in DOS. Smile
I grabbed some remains of Microcode Solutions from the waybackmachine some time ago.
Its some kind of guide/reference for Fusion: https://mega.co.nz/#!n0xEiZTK!1nCUw7hEdbnF-77H5b6mphTQSuqNaQXpZPiRzQEDQMs

You will also need one of these ROM files for Fusion:

Setting up an emulator just for saving a few floppies may be overkill - but its way more fun than rawwrite or dd, if you want to take a trip down memory lane.
I´m fairly sure that Fusion could use the recommended DiskCopy4.2 application with a compatible MacOS.

Sure there is a way to make images from Mac HD floppies with "dd" or a similar command in Windows, but I do not know how to achieve that in Windows.

Did you take a look at HFV Explorer meanwhile?

Exactly.
Fusion30: MacOS 7 to 8.1 on DOS, low level emulation.

or:
BasiliskII Build 142: MacOS 7 to 8.1 on Windows. (+GNU/Linux +OSX)

just to mention:
SheepShaver for MacOS 7.5 to 9.0.4 for Windows, GNU/Linux and OSX.
(no floppy support)

last not least:
MiniVMac for MacOS 0.X to 7.5 for Windows, GNU/Linux, OSX, Android, iOS...
(no floppy either)

Both Fusion30 and BasiliskII / 142 do handle Mac HD floppies, SCSI and other goodies.
Fusion is somewhat faster due to its Assembler coding and a tad more compatible for old 256 color games.

Fusion queries the floppy drive once it is running automatically. (Every second or so)
BasiliskII / 142 usually needs Ctrl-Shift-11 to mount a Mac floppy.

does this fusion emulator give access to serial ports? + pci hardware?
ie: do u think it would work with sound cards and midi devices aswell?
the main reason why ive never paid attention to any emulators is the
lack of hardware support for peripherals that matter to me for audio production

The docs say serial ports are supported. I never ventured to try, as I "only" wanted to use SCSI which works like a charm. I doubt MIDI would work and not many users will still tinker with MacOS on a DOS host. Smile
The missing harware support is the biggest issue with emulators, thats true.
If any, Fusion would be the one to give it a whirl, maybe some guys over at Emaculation are willing to share their insights from past decades.

The crux with devices attached to Fusion will be the DOS drivers.
IIRC only the VGA drivers are internal. SCSI already relies on the (WIN) ASPI.

Fusion is unaware of USB or PCI devices, I´m afraid.
I never managed to map a USB to SCSI, though it should be possible as DOS drivers are available.

  - I've recently found a useful DOS command-line app that both Reads and Writes to/from Mac floppy disks, its called "Diskimg.exe": I DL'd it from The Mac Geek downloads page, the file to DL here is named "PC_Mac.zip" (the floppy disk icons in page are the DL's). Its the 3rd DL under the heading "Apple Macintosh Tools for PC People". [Edit]: Diskimg.exe is contained in the 1st 3 DL's under the heading "Apple Macintosh Tools for PC People", so take your pick.

I've been using Diskimg.exe on XP, I assume that it'll work on earlier DOS/Win OS's.

Preferably you will have Diskimg.exe in your DOS or Windows PATH.

To copy Mac floppies to ".img" on a PC, the command is:

diskimg r 1440 c:\floppy-name.img

To write a .img file back to floppy the command is:

diskimg w 1440 c:\floppy-name.img

Notes & Caveat's:
Any Mac floppy disk you wish to copy, read or write to on a PC can only be 1.4MB HD. This is a limitation of PC hardware and not the software. 400 & 800 K Mac floppies cannot be archived.

If moving a diskimg.exe created ".img" file to a Mac:
The floppy image that you create will not have Macintosh creator codes, so on a Mac, recipients will need to enter these manually as "Creator Type: ddsk and File Type: dimg" (use Creator Changer).
This will make it a Disk Copy 6.3 Read/Write disk image, and they'll need to lock it at this stage to prevent the Finder writing to the image if it gets mounted onto a Mac's desktop. Or they can use Disk Copy 6 to convert the read/write image to "Read Only" before mounting the image.

doesnt work in dos 6.22 - i just tried to execute it and it says "this program cannot be run in DOS mode"

doesnt work in windows 3.11 either..

i guess it requires windows 95/98/2k ???
maybe its not compatible with dos 6.22? needs dos 7.1+ ?
u said it works in XP's command prompt? which DOS is that?

when i click it in win311 the screen goes black and then returns as if i hadnt clicked it at all, does nothing.

Oh that is a real shame. I've since tried it in Win 98se and it works OK in that, so I'm guessing that its for Win 95 and newer, not DOS 6.x & Win 3.1 Sad

[Edit]: Here's two shareware products that you can try, at least these will run on DOS/Win 3.1.1:

WinImage: If your Win 31 box has Win32's installed, you can DL any version on this page from version 6.0 down to 3.0 (the earliest with Mac 1.4MB support).
If you don't have Win32's installed then you need to DL version 3.0, "wima1630.zip" the Win16 only version.

MAC-ETTE v3.0U <-- (Direct FTP DL): "Mac-ette is a PC utility which can read, write, format and duplicate Macintosh HFS format 1.4 Meg diskettes on a PC equipped with a 3.5 inch high density diskette drive.".

Note: Of the two, I've only tried WinImage and then, only with DOS media. I don't have a current Win 3.1/DOS set up to test further. HTH

mac-ette is definately working
it opens in a dos-window in windows3.1 gui environment
i just was able to read the contents of an opcode oms disk!!!!
now.. to figure out how to copy them properly.. without screwing up the files..

its working! its reading the disk.. it lets u select which files by marking them pressin M
and then u select copy files and it does it... copying the files from the diskette to the directory that the macette program is running from (current working dir?)

it said "copy files via data-fork mode?" or something like that ..

re: winImage.. it says theres a 16bit version of winimage 3.0

wima1630.zip
Contains the Win16 version in English for Windows 3.1.
170,036 bytes (approx. 47 seconds at 28.8 K)

will this one work?

it says theres a 16bit version of winimage 3.0 wima1630.zip

I already outlined that one above.

However, I've re-discovered another that I've used before and it works in all Win OS's including DOS 6 (runs under DOS 3.2 or later). Its a freeware called Rawrite2.exe and can be DL'd from here (look for "rawrite2-1.1.zip" link in page).

Same rules as for Diskimage.exe apply.

To make an image file from a 1.4MB Mac floppy the syntax for Rawrite2 is:
rawrite2 a: c:\imagename.img

Moving the .img file to a Mac, use the Creator Changer to set the Creator & File types to Disk Copy's Read/Write types: "Creator Type: ddsk and File Type: dimg". From there, either lock the image before mounting or use Disk Copy 6 to convert the image to a safer Read Only or Disk Copy 4.2 format.
