The original source code for MacPaint and QuickDraw have been released by Apple to a museum which has put downloads for the code on its website. Now if Apple would only do this with all its old software!

The source code for Mac OS 7.1 is out there, too. Not officially released of course - it was leaked somehow. It isn't hard to find if you know where you look! : )

The Woz released his code for the Apple II, ROM and OS, some time ago.
Remember finding the Mac OS 7 source code many years ago, but I didn't download all of it and keep it.
Now what would also be good to find is the source and/or executables from "Project Star Trek", Mac OS 7.5 and later on Intel. Rhapsody put a version of OS8 on Inel and OS9 was also meant to have been maintained for Intel too. It was only the PPC OS's that were allegedly written and maintained for Intel. I think that they were roo slow at the time, but I'm sure it would fly on a modern 3.2GHz processor.
MacUser / MacWorld had a story about when they were covering OS8 Copland or similar.

The source for the Apple II Monitor was in every technical reference manual released by Apple from 1977 up until the release of the IIgs, which was the first machine not to include source.

I'd like to know where! I did some searching but I can't find it. If you don't mind emailing me at my username at gmail.com. That would be great. I would love to see under the hood of a classic mac os.

heard about it in Macbreak Weekly and read about it on Slashdot and saw it on some mailinglist and at Macdomain its awesome as hell
Programming in Assembly is a lost artform now... I pine for the days of lightning fast apps that are tiny, and run smoothly on 8MHz machines
The "Mac OS 7.1" source code is more accurately Mac ROM source code. It's missing the Sound Manager and the build tools. It sure is out there.
