Newb needs help with capturing ROM...

Howdy Macintosh Garden!

Sorry if there's already a thread that offers the remedy, but after a few searches I couldn't find it :/

I've been looking over the fantastic guides over how to capture the ROM and run emulation via Basilisk II, so I dug out my old Performa 550; it'sa bit dusty, but it's in OK shape, or rather it appeared to be.

When I turned the PC on, it works like a charm except for one terrible little problem. The computer seems to have a problem with vertical 'skipping;' and the monitor almost looks like an old film reel that's moving to slow. I tried fiddling with the vertical hold controls on the back of the case, but alas, no go.

I could still possibly grab the ROM off of it, once I get a USB Floppy to get all the correct programs from my PC to it, but I could also develop epilepsy from looking at it! Any potential thoughts on how I could repair it, or if I should just search for another one?

Thanks in advance!

Google for "redundantrobot" maybe?
Some help can be found there, for setting up BasiliskII.

Yes, this is a big hint! Do it.

That's actually a handy-dandy tutorial, and I suppose I could get the ROM right there. Also has much more straight forward steps, so this will come in handy Smile

After fiddling more with my old Performa I'm quite certain the issue is the monitor itself. To repair it may even cost more than finding a new Performa.

This RedundantRobot has me baffled, though. What are the legal issues surrounding a ROM and how it is acquired?

The legal issues may vary, depending on the country you are living in.
The ROM itself, of course is copyrighted. As long as you physically own one, it should be allright using it either for BasiliskII or for your Performa alternatively.
The "New World" ROM for SheepShaver can be extracted from iMac update, which is available for free from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1241?viewlocale=en_US .
As you already own the MacOS, nobody should blame you for using material once purchased.
