NeXBar 1.0b2

I have partitioned the HD of my old Lombard and installed Jaguar next to Mac OS 9. I really hate the dock. Is there a way to get rid of it while keeping the trash can on the desktop?

Also, there used to be an interesting replacement for the dock: NeXBar:
http://web.archive.org/web/20020202200434/http://www.ubermind.com/~khans...

Does anybody still have this? All download links on the web are dead. The last version seems to have been 1.0b2.

Unable to locate NeXBar, sorry. Tho' there are a couple of things you can try to make the Dock look less dock-like.

DL TinkerTool Classic for Jag and get it to move the Dock to the right-side of the screen and move it down lower right corner. Remove all icons from the Dock except for the Trash. [Edit] Except for the Finder which is a running app, of course.

DL ClearDock 1.3 for Jag from this WayBack link. ClearDock requires the Application Enhancer (Ape), also on same WayBack linked page (the DL's are active for both). This will make the Dock transparent so in effect you would have only the Trash icon showing in the bottom right corner... plus application icons when they're active, but maybe that won't be so annoying for you.

There is another similar to ClearDock tool called "TransparentDock" for 10.2 and later, its a "nagware" which will remind you to register everytime you boot into X after a week of grace... unless you decide to pay/donate ($8) towards it... TinkerTool & ClearDock + Ape are freeware.

Windowmaker was available up to OSX 10.5 via Fink.

Apparently it's in MacPorts, see:

https://trac.macports.org/browser/trunk/dports/x11/windowmaker/Portfile

(albeit not the latest version) so it's probably the easiest to try that
first. After that you might try to update the portfile to the latest
version or fix any errors you encounter, see how to make a local version
of the port you can work on here:

http://guide.macports.org/#development.local-repositories

It's also in fink (but no binary since 10.5):

http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/windowmaker

But maybe unless you use X11 in a full root window on OS X, Window Maker
might not be that useful because normally the Aqua WM will manage X apps.
(I may be wrong though, I've never tried Window Maker on OS X.)"

If you install this and set a full root window for X11, and set Windowmaker Dock as the startup X11 app, then you could get the ORIGINAL NextStep dock Smile

A *LOT* of work involved tho.

Oh men, this cannot be! Such a fuss just to get rid of the f... dock!

Mike TomTom, your solution is clever but the (reduced) dock will pop up all the time as you correctly mentioned.

macmeister, I didn't know about WindowManager. This has a great look but there does not seem to be Macport or Fink builds for Jaguar. (However, I remember there might be a Fink built in the legacy distribution of OpenOffice for Jaguar; I have to check). It would be great to have a Rhapsody window manager replacement for Aqua.

I cannot believe that it isn't possible just to rip the trash can out of the dock and put it on the desktop instead. In a second step it should be possible somehow to just switch off the dock. Isn't there such a solution?

I'm not a great fan of the Dock either. What I usually do is; Move the Dock to the right side of the screen (so I'm less likely to activate it). Set it to a fixed small size. Then Hide it from view. This way I only access (and see it) if I need to.

But. Hold on! I think I have found something that you might just like.

Its called iCan, a Trash can replacement for Jaguar & Panther that sits on your Desktop just like in OS 9.

iCan Version 3.0.5
A customizable trashcan for OS X desktops
for those who still miss the one in OS 9.

iCan is is a trashcan for OS X which sits on the desktop. It's interactive - it appears empty when it's empty, and full when it's full, just like the one in OS 9.

You can drag to it, unmount disks with it, click it to open the trash folder, and it responds to the Finder's command-delete.

iCan version 3.0 is fully compatible with OS X 10.3 (Panther).

So, move the Dock to where you're least likely to trigger it and Hide it. Install this and you're good to go.

I've been testing it on Pear PC (running Panther) and it works just like it claims. Brilliant! I hope that it runs in Tiger too as I want to be using this if I can on my little G4 iBook.

Only caveat is that it wants registering. Unfortunately its now abandoned, can't be registered and can only be DL'd via the Wayback iCan link above. It would be nice to find a reg for it. Still, it doesn't appear to be very naggy, so far.

Anyhow, give this one a try, its a keeper for me.

Do NOT try to install WindowMaker on OS X Lion. WxWidgets doesn't build, and that is a NECESSITY for WindowMaker (I believe). Apart from that, the MacPorts build was going well.

Mike TomTom, thanks a lot. iCan is the way to go. I will check it out.

An intelligent solution for getting rid of the dock might be to hide the dock for good instead of disabling it. There is an interesting solution for Mac OS X up to Tiger here:
http://www.macosxtips.co.uk/index_files/remove-the-dock.php

macmeister, don't worry I certainly will never use Lion. Too dumb a system. Regarding Lion there is a trash app and some hints for removing the dock here:

I'm noticing the nags a bit tho' and would love to find a rego for it. So far no luck... anybody?

Earlier you mentioned Fink. I've located my archived Fink & Fink Commander installers for Jaguar. Also archived is the necessary X11 installer for Jaguar (which didn't ship with Jag) and XFree86 for Jag, giving a choice of two X11 window managers for Jag. If you need/want these, I'll post them up somewhere for you.

xy, I had the archive & the time, so here it is Wink
Contains installer for Fink (installs Fink + Fink Commander), there is also an updated Fink Commander in the archive to replace the FC installed with Fink. Plus the two X11's for Jaguar.

MD5sum & DL: ae983ab2ae5c5fc8491cb66367468c31 *Fink-x11-4Jag.zip 121.73 MB

Fink Commander is a GUI app for Fink to help manage files, DL & install apps. I don't know if this Fink will still be useful and it can still DL files that are compatible with Jaguar's OS. I don't have a working Jag to test this out on. So If its helpful to you that would be great.

The archive is zipped, let me know if its OK & usable.

Mike TomTom, the zip archive is okay.
Regarding your iCan problem, try
ICAN-20NI933-000
I tested it: it works.

Also, I checked the above linked OpenOffice 1.1.2 dmg: The installer is supposed to automatically install all X11 packages neeeded. In addition, the dmg contains an extra folder with an older version of Window Maker in case the most recent version does not work on older PPCs.

Regarding NeXBar, the app also used to be on CDs coming with Jaguar books. Maybe someone still has such a book with the goodies CD.

Hi xy. Much thanks. Next I'll be wanting to know (if you install Fink + Fink Commander) if it still connects to repositories of files that can be used on a PPC Jaguar install. i.e; Is it still of any working use at all?

The included X11's will still be useful on Jaguar if only for OpenOffice 1.1.2 (which doesn't require Fink) but as you say, it also included the Xfree86 version of this WM for Jaguar users - same as I included with that archive. You might prefer the included Apple's X11 "preview" install, its about the same as what got shipped with Panther but was never released "officially" for Jaguar.

About iCan... I'm not running it at present. I've discovered it to be rather a bit of a CPU hog. On my iBook it sits at about roughly 2 - 3% of CPU at idle... which to me is a lot of CPU use for something that's doing very little. Well, it does look pretty, and being able to get rid of the nags, a real plus, thank you, so I'll archive it away for now.

I've since being playing with a "do-it-yourself" AppleScript Trashcan alternative. I have it on my desktop and have given it a nice custom Trashcan icon. Its pretty basic. It'll move files to the Trash if dragged onto it and it also unmounts .dmg & CD's etc if dragged onto it. So far it just sits there, not consuming CPU while inactive, which is pretty much what I want.

NeXBar. Now there's an elusive wee critter. I've had a hard look for this, to date, all leads dead. What peeves me off with most sites offering software for DL. They never archive or mirror, only link to some long gone dead site. You'd think that someone somewhere would have archived this. Maybe they have, but I haven't stumbled across that archive... yet.

Would "ParaDocks" be of any use to you? It a YAWL (Yet Another Wayback Link).

Mike TomTom, thanks a lot for ParaDocks. This seems to even be better than NeXBar because it seems to have the option to put running apps into the menu bar instead into the dock; I do the same on Mac OS 9 (with an app which is on MacGarden but of which I forgot the name - I can look it up if someone is interested). This I find most comfortable because the desktop is free. Thanks again. I will install ParaDocks immediately.

Regarding X-11 and Fink: There are no X-11 apps which I would like to install. OpenOffice is a slow nightmare which is recommend for G4s, and I do not want to have it on my Lombard G3 with an oversensitive CPU or cache. The only thing would be Window Maker. However, I haven't really understood what a window manager is: Will Window Maker enable me to get rid of Aqua? That would be great. If yes, will it be faster than Aqua? Also, will it change the look of non X-11 apps like Adobe Reader, InDesign, etc.? If yes, are there any known performance problems?

Regarding X-11: Which version would you recommend for Window Maker on Jaguar.

As for iCan: Yes, I noticed it comes a bit slow onto the desktop when booting into Jaguar. However, its great advantage is I can trash locked files with it, something the Jaguar trash doesn't do; I missed this very much because for Mac OS 9 there are apps which trash locked files. Your own trash can sounds good.

I thought ParaDocks was a good one, as its similar in use to the Mac OS 8.5 - 9.2.2 Application Switcher. I used this when I had a Jaguar installed. I've DL'd your additional links, thanks.

Of the two X11's, Xfree86's was OK, it gave you more choices of window styles, e.g. Unix motif etc, but I settled on Apple's X11 for its simplicity and uniformity (programs running under it looked much the same as any aqua app running under OS X). So running a *nix app didn't look too dissimilar to what you already ran.

But you might want to try the Xfree86 version out for yourself as that does claim to display full screen whatever window manager that might be available to you.

I don't know anything about Window Maker tho' and I never attempted to replace the Mac OS X desktop with another, only having run *nix programs via X11 in a windowed situation.

Classic Menus... Here's a Classic Menu for you. Its what I use:

Launch the AppleScript Editor - must be native OS 9 or Classic, not OS X's AppleScript Editor.

Write No code, i.e. zip, nada, zero, zip. Nothing. Leave the code section blank.
Save it as an Application, give it a name (I call mine "Classic Menus"). Check the "Stay Open" box & "Never Show Startup Screen".

Move it to somewhere accessible in PPC OS X. - In OS X, get info on it and check that it launches in Classic only (or is a classic app). Close the info window and your ready to go. Double click to launch. It does absolutely nothing except, you get the OS 9 Apple Menu in Classic. Leave it running and its available to you in the Dock (or ParaDocks etc) whenever you need the Classic Apple Menu, click its icon in the Dock etc. - Give it a nice custom rainbow Apple icon,

The shortest AppleScript [n]ever written Wink

Thanks Mike TomTom for all the hints. Regarding FruitMenu, I tested v. 3.4.3: it does not install on Jaguar. v. 3.4.2, however, does. Link for this version:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.unsanity.net/fruitmenu-342.dmg

As for Classic Menu, the newer v. 2.7.6 also runs on Jaguar:
http://www.sigsoftware.com/classicmenu/

I have installed ParaDocks. It's great. DragThing sucks as it does on Mac OS 9.

I deinstalled iCan because it not only uses up too much CPU but also it does not really work on Jaguar: Many things I tried to drag onto the can where not accepted by the can. NOTE: If you deinstall iCan don't drag the root level files ICANotification into the trash. They are system files needed for the menu bar, not iCan files!

Regarding X11 I will wait until I know what exactly Window maker is and does. It's a lot of work installing (and deinstalling) these files. But thanks for sharing your experiences.

On Cheetah (Mac OS X 1.Innocent it seems to have been possible to put the trash from the dock onto the desktop:
http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20011015234459575
The easier way (i.e. without terminal) would be to use PrefEdit (http://www.bresink.de/osx/LegacyProducts.html) and go to com.apple.finder and then to
finder.hasTrashH and then put in 1.

This does not work on Jaguar. Apple seems to have removed the possibility. But maybe there is a hack to restore this.

There is a XFree 86 4.8.0 version which is supposed to be the last version to run on Jaguar. Mike TomTom, your Fink archive contains version 4.3.0; the Apple X11 Preview seems to be based on XFree86 4.2). However, I did not find a Fink or otherwise precompiled download link for version 4.8.0. Was there ever one?

Hi xy. Taken XFree/X11 off the back burner? Wink I don't know of any other pre-compiled binaries of this, sorry. Its just what I had at the time (and had archived) for my own use. Not to say that there aren't any newer ones out there.

Also, my AppleScript trashcan app is OK enough for my own needs for now...

[Edit] However, using my (ahem) incredible skills of deduction, I located the binaries for XFree86 version 4.8.0 here. I'm guessing the files you'll want are in the "Darwin-powerpc" directory. Do RTFM before installing, especially the bit at the end of the very lengthy chapter for step 3 where it adds:

Mike TomTom, thanks a lot for the link. Yes, the whole issue of Window Maker (i.e. getting rid of Aqua) is haunting me. I will try to install XFree86 4.8.0 and WindowMaker. Let's see what comes out of it.

What is better?: to install the mess of the XFree86 download link according to the installation instructions given or with Fink Commander?

Next problem will be to find the highest version of Window Maker for Jaguar PPC. I do not know whether the most recent version 0.95.4 is for PPC. The last version might be 0.92.0. I will try this out. The last Fink version was, I beliebe 0.8... (it is no longer downloadable even via www.archive.org).

PS: There also is OroborOSX with Platinum theme: http://oroborosx.sourceforge.net/themes/

Hi xy. For an X11 window manager on Jaguar, I settled on Apple's X11 preview release for Jaguar. Mainly because it was basically what got bundled in with Panther (its UI is exactly the same). And also because it was basic to install and simple to use (comparatively speaking). I did install XFree86 too, but went with the X11 preview release in the long term as it was all that I needed for my simple requirements.

What I would be concerned about (and don't know the answer to as I have no way of testing) is whether Fink running on Jaguar will be of any use at all, as a package manager. Will there be any PPC packages that it can go off and install out there for Jaguar? Given support for Fink is rather Intel driven with PPC support going back to 10.4 at best.

WindowMaker or any window manager replacement for OS X is something I have had no experience with either so cannot advise, unfortunately. Only, it might be difficult to install unless you can install its necessary dependencies etc, and you might need a package manager like Fink to do that for you.

Current Fink PPC packages for WindowMaker require OS X 10.5

Alternative window managers as Fink packages are here (including WindowMaker), what I viewed here for PPC Mac tend to be for 10.5

MacPorts is another packet manager for OS X, its been around for about as long as Fink, but it too, focuses on Intel Mac with PPC support going back to 10.4

Mike TomTom, there used to be Fink Window Maker packages for Jaguar (the last being WM version 0.8x). The last xFree86 Fink package was your version 4.3). However, none of this is downloadable any more (not even via www.archive.org).

I have a feeling the easiest way to install Window Maker is with the OpenOffice 1.1.2 installer. It installs XFree86 4.3 and and gives the option to also instal Window Maker 0.6x and OroborOSX. However, the installer descritiption says said it will accept already installed versions of XFree86 so it might a worth a try to install the newest version of XFree86 according the installation description for Darwin given by the XFree86 people, and then try to install the OpenOffice package, delete (not needed by me) OpenOffice after installing an thus have Window Maker.

The WindowMaker versions available for download from the Window Maker website all to not seem to be compiled for Jaguar. So there might be a big problem for a simple Mac user like me.

However, I am still not sure whether Window Maker is of any use without an X11 application. I mean, all Jaguar apps were written for Aqua so there might be problems running them with Wndow Maker (in case they run with Window Maker at all). This is a reason why I am hesitating to install anything.

macmeister, you recommended Window Maker. Have you experiences running Macintosh Aqua apps with Window Maker?

MacPorts does definitely not support Jaguar according to my research.

Hi xy. I repeat; I did install XFree86 (the version I uploaded for you) but I reverted to the Apple X11 preview, because of its ease of use and because it was basically what later came with Panther, 10.3 and later, 10.4. That is, the X11 "preview" was usable, and easy to implement and compatible with Jaguar.

Having X11 on top of Mac OS X gave me access to Linux apps, locally and those running on our server.

However, WindowMaker AFAIK, requires X Windows - at this point I don't know anything else about WindowMaker, but if it requires X Windows (e.g. Apple's X11 or XFree86), I don't see how it could also run OS X apps.

I had a quick squiz for something helpful... best I could come up with was:

You can install WindowMaker to OS X but it will run under X Windows and
only X Windows/ GNU applications will work .OS X apps are either Cocoa
or Carbon, they have nothing to do with Windowmaker.

Interesting I guess, and probably not what you'd hope to read, the article in full is here (relevant post by "Ilgaz Öcal").

Personally and this is only IMHO, if I owned a Lombard (and I would love to own a Lombard) I'd only run a classic Mac OS on it. Then, if I wanted a different look and feel to its desktop, I'd make use of Kaleidoscope with a NeXT UI, or an Aqua UI etc, etc... much easier to do.

I have only used WindowMaker under a few Linux variants. I was fairly impressed with it. It can be a tad confusing at first, but it's alright when you get the hang of it. I use a lot of X11 apps under Intel iMac, and do not like the pause during X11 launching, but if this were to REPLACE Finder/Dock, then it would ALWAYS be running, right?

Well, yes that is the big question: Is it possible with Window Maker to replace Finder and Dock or the entire Aqua desktop?

The last version of Window Maker by Fink for Jaguar was downlodable here:

I believe that if you replaced the Finder, with Window Maker (ie. X11 already launched and running) then any programs you launch would use the currently set window model (Aqua/Motif) ala Linux Desktop Environments. Because I am WAY too frightened to try this, I will stick with Mac OS 9.2.2 as my boot OS Smile

This answers all my questions: no Window Maker instead of Aqua.
(Since the gone by Fink Window Maker was the only Window Maker for Jaguar there is no Window Maker anyway for a non programmer anyway).

Mike TomTom and macmeister, Mac OS 9 native still is what I use on a daily basis on my Lombard. I set up the Jaguar paritition because Acrobat Reader 5 sometimes has problems reading newer PDF versions; Adobe Reader 7 on Jaguar does (so far) read all PDFs.
Also, Distiller 5 does not handle OTFs on Mac OS 9 native; in the Classic environment of Jaguar, however, Distiller 5, for some weird reason, does handle Open Type Fonts (at least those which Mac OS 9 or old InDesign on Mac OS 9 support).

It was kind of interesting to play with Jaguar only to find confirmed that Mac OS X and Aqua suck.

macmeister, on the official Window Maker website there now is a Window Maker Live CD for download based on Debian (for PC only). That might be something for you.

Just a suggestion; Try "downgrading" Acrobat 5.x to Acrobat 4.0... This is what I use on Mac OS 7.5.3 to 9.2.2 - reason: I find that its more reliable at opening newer PDFs than version 5 and (important for me) it never nags about a PDF that's been created on a newer version of Acrobat Smile

Its not 100% problem free & I guess that it will balk at OTFs too'... otherwise 4 is still preferable to 5 on a classic Mac OS, for me.

Mike TomTom, as a matter of fact I do use Acrobat Reader 4 as first choice PDF opener. It's much faster than version 5. However, sometimes version 4 failes and I have to use Acrobat Reader 5. Sometimes now even version 5 failes and I have to switch to Jaguar. Generally, I avoid opening PDFs with Acrobat instead of Acrobat Reader because Acrobat starts very slowly.

As for creating PDFs Distiller 4 does not allow mixing TTFs and PS Fonts whereas Distiller 5 does.

For fast PDF creation I use Jaws PDF creator. It is much faster than the Distiller. However, the quality is not the same: it makes mistakes (reversion of letters, etc.). For DTP purposes Distiller is the one and only choice.

macmeister, I have tried the GNUSTep live cd some time ago. It does not work on my Lombard: After finishing booting and welcoming me with "welcome to GNUStep" the desktop does not show up. Why this is so I do not know. I burned the CD image as an untouched and secured ISO. There are other Linux PPC live CDs which do not work on the Lombard, for instance, Fedora live CD.

I see this as a real plus in Distiller 4 - It allows me to embed only PS fonts into a PDF, even though I don't keep any PS fonts in the System's Fonts folder. Nifty.

I've used Jaws PDF creator and Ghostscript, too. But Distiller rules.

I also try to use PS fonts only but sometimes there simply are no PS fonts awailable like, for instance, for foreign language fonts or special ornaments. Foreign language fonts anyway force me to use OTFs sometimes. Try that with Distiller 4...

Ghostscript is good for TeX fonts. Distiller is not very good and very very slow in handling TeX fonts. But who needs TeX since InDesign with its algorism stolen from TeX? OzTeX is a nightmare. Also, try to install a font into TeX -good luck!

I tend to generate PS fonts as required (fontographer) so don't seem to strike those issues. I've also found that I can mix TT with PS and generate PDFs using Distiller 4... But its not something I intend to do. I prefer to produce PS embedded PDFs only. Call me "old fashioned". Hey it must be true. I love using these old Macs and their softwares, after all Wink
