Outpost (Sierra) - Black Text in black boxes? Unreadable

I'm trying to get Outpost running (downloaded from here of course) in OS9, but when I boot up the game, all (almost all) text is black on black, making it impossible to read. The introduction plays and displays just fine.

I'm running the game at 1024x at 256 Colours - The issue was also present in SheepShaver before I got my "new" G3 iMac up and running.

I've run into this problem before, in Mac OS 8.0 and 8.1. The problem is that Outpost is trying to leverage the native Mac OS GUI for windows and text, but it's painting them in its own color scheme through a not-so future proof means. This works fine with the System 7 window chrome, but not in the OS 8+ "Platinum" theme and its chrome.

One way of getting around it, if you have a Mac that is capable of booting into some version of System 7 and you're running any version of Mac OS from System 7 to Mac OS 8.1, is to get ahold of a later version of the Appearance Manager that allows you to disable the Platinum theme for Mac apps that weren't made for it.

Tyler Sable has a version for download. I'll probably upload this to Mac Garden later, for safe keeping: http://www.fenestrated.net/~macman/755/Appearance1.0.3.cpt.bin

His instructions are fairly simple. They start from the second paragraph under "Install TidBits" in his guide to a Modern System 7.5.5: http://www.fenestrated.net/~macman/755/#Four

Once you have that set up, open up the Appearance control panel, click on the "Options" button, and uncheck "System-wide platinum appearance" under "Appearances" if it's checked. Then reboot.

This works fine under Mac OS 8.0 and 8.1, but I wouldn't try it in 8.5 and later. The Appearance control panel went through some major changes starting with 8.5, including support for custom themes, and I don't think it allows you to revert to the System 7 chrome anymore.

There's a utility (I believe it's on the MacAddict CDs, which I do have a copy of in this case) called Kaleidoscope (OS 9 compatible), which lets you add all sorts of crazy themes to your windows, one of which I think is the classic System 7 theme. Note that it's been a long time since I even thought of it and make no guarantees that it will work in your case/not mess up your system, but it's worth a try.
