AppleSingle, BinHex and MacBinary

Hello, I have a Mac with Mini vMac and SheepShaver both installed. They are very fun, especially with the games here. But I would like to know how I can compress files to AppleSingle, BinHex or MacBinary. I am running OS X 10.9, are there any apps that can do this?

Usually the question often asked here is how to "decompress" these file types, rather than to compress.

If you do mean to compress old classic Mac files so they can be uploaded online, then you can do this on your emulated Mac (Basilisk II, Mini vMac, SheepShaver, etc), using a Deluxe version of Stuffit. Deluxe version 3.5 or 4.0 is a good choice for Mini vMac, and version 5.5.1 is a good choice for Basilisk II & SheepShaver running a Mac OS 7.1 to 9.x

BTW, neither AppleSingle, BinHex or MacBinary are compression formats. These formats convert classic Macintosh binaries to a form that's safe for sending through networks. Binhex actually creates files that are larger than the original.

To compress, typically you would use Aladdin DropStuff or Deluxe to compress to Stuffit formatted ".sit" archives. Compressed ".sit" files are safe to transfer across networks as is. There is no need to put ".sit" files into a ".bin" wrapper, for example, when uploading them to a server.
