Please help! I want to play my old Tomb Raider!

Hi everybody!

I desperately want to play my old copy of Tomb Raider The Last Revelation. I played this game years ago on our old iMac (year 2000 model, Classic OS) but that iMac has since gone to the computer graveyard (i.e. our basement).

I'd love to manage to get the game running on my MacBook (year 2007 model, OS 10.6.. I downloaded SheepShaver but I'm not computer savvy at all and reading the instructions on http://emaculation.com/doku.php/sheepshaver_mac_os_x_setup is like reading a foreign language.

Can anybody explain to me, as though I am five-years-old, how to set up SheepShaver and use it to get my Tomb Raider to run?

Do you know from any source, if TR will run on SheepShaver? If a game requires a dedicated graphics card, you can pretty much count it out.

According to this site, it requires a 3D graphics card (ATI Rage Pro, 3dfx Voodoo 2 or later).

You would be better off dusting off the old G3 and clearing a bit of desk space for it - and use it for playing all those great old games. The experience will be a lot less frustrating, guaranteed.

Unfortunately the G3 is far too old to run anything. I lugged it up from the basement just a few weeks ago to see if I could try TR on it and it made these godawful noises and then crashed. So it looks like that's out of the question.

However, I did notice that in the Games section of this website you have Tomb Raider Chronicles listed for download for OS 8 - OSX. I'm assuming that means that I can play it on my OS 10.6.8, but when I clicked the Download button I got this message:

Possibly will not run on 10.6.8 as the OSX mentioned there would be for PPC OS X, but if you have Rossetta installed, then it might run.

The nosuchkey errors are what you will normally get here, with files that have been freshly uploaded (they require manual activation by an admin) they may not be available from the link for a few days or more. That link was only for an updater file tho', and not the full program. You can temporarily get it here if you need it.

The full program DL is further down in the Description area.

Good luck with it [on 10.6.8]. If it runs OK for you, write back.

Oh poo, it didn't work...

It installed but when I tried to open the game it gave me the message that Classic isn't supported or something like that.

So...does that mean that if I somehow manage to emulate OS 8.6 (I have the original CD) then I should be able to download and play TR Chronicles?

The problem is, as I said in my original post, that I have no clue how to use SheepShaver or any other emulator.

However, on a positive note, I did get 4X4 Evolution 2 to work on my 10.6.8, even though it's only native up to OS 10.4.

Me, again (someone else please chip-in).

The emulator situation, re "Tomb Raider The Last Revelation" I say, is not viable. Unless some knowledgeable soul fronts up and says otherwise and can cite some proof of it actually running under emulation. Please do so (161 reads of this thread, before this posting).

The SheepShaver emulator is pretty good at emulating a PPC Mac running Mac OS 9.0.4 or earlier. But it cannot emulate 3D hardware as well, and the game you want to play, requires physical 3D hardware graphics (not emulated or emulate-able 3D graphic acceleration).

I would re-visit your old G3 iMac and try to nut out why "it made these godawful noises and then crashed"... Surely it would be your best option in ever playing this game - Short of buying a working PPC Mac on ebay or wherever, which is capable of doing this.

TR requires 3D-acceleration. Neither SheepShaver, nor Basilisk II have 3D-acceleration support. It will be more possible to play Windows version of this game under DOSBOX and Windows 95...
