i found powerbook 1400 cd in a thrift store today so i decided to look it up online but their isn't any copies of it for sale online and for some it brings up search results for mac os 8 does anyone on here know more on this?

Probably depends on the particular 1400 model as to what Mac OS is on the CD.
PowerBook 1400 models as shipped were:

The 1st 1400s shipped with Mac OS 7.5.3
The end of line 1400s shipped with Mac OS 7.6.1
The PowerBook 1400 CD listed here at the MG, states Mac OS 8.0 as the OS.
If you run the "Apple Tour of the PowerBook 1400" from here, I think this outlines some of the software that you'd expect to find on the install CD of the 1st generation 1400's.

I uploaded untested Mac OS 7.6; it is twenty floppies (nineteen install and one Disk Tools).

The 1400 will run up to OS 9.1, but she's pretty sluggish, even with the maximum 64MB of RAM.
Runs 8.6 pretty nicely though, and runs real smooth with 7.6.1 - especially using an 8GB compact flash card as its system drive.
