Mac OS 7 (codenamed "Big Bang") is a single-user graphical user interface-based operating system for Macintosh computers. It was introduced on May 13, 1991 by Apple Computer. It succeeded System 6, and was the main Macintosh operating system until it was succeeded by Mac OS 8 in 1997. Features added with the Mac OS 7 release included cooperative multitasking, virtual memory, personal file sharing, an improved user interface, QuickTime, and QuickDraw 3D.
With the release of version 7.6 in 1997, Apple officially renamed the operating system "Mac OS", a name which had first appeared on Mac OS 7.5.1's boot screen. Mac OS 7 was developed for the Motorola 68k processor, but was ported to the PowerPC after Apple adopted the new processor.
Mac OS 7.6 (codenamed "Harmony") was the last major update, released in 1997. With 7.6, the operating system was officially called "Mac OS" instead of "System". Mac OS 7.6 introduced several features that were also included in Mac OS 8, including a revamped Extensions Manager, more native PowerPC code for Power Macs, more bundled Internet tools and utilities, and an overall more-stable Finder with increased memory allocation. In this version, the PowerTalk feature added in 7.5 was removed due to poor application support, and support for a large number of older Macintosh models was dropped.
The minor update to Mac OS 7.6.1 finally ported the 68k exception handling routines to PowerPC, turning dreaded type 11 errors into less harmful errors (type 1, 2 or 3, usually) as crashing applications would more often terminate safely instead of crashing the operating system.

This is Mac OS 7.6, another retail version of Macintosh Mac OS 7 family. It contains many new features and major enhancements such as OpenDoc, QuickTime 2.5, Apple CD-ROM 5.3.1, OpenDoc Essentails kit, improved Memory managements, and much-much more.
Speed Doubler
A bug relating to the interaction between Speed Doubler versions prior to 1.3.2 and 2.0.1 and Find File has been discovered. It can lead to corruption of a disk's catalog. A more detailed description can be found on Macintouch and updaters to fix the problem can be found at Connectix's updaters page.
Asarte's Toast 3.0.5
Apple CD-ROM 5.3.1, which comes with Mac OS 7.6, installs a driver for most CD Recorders, even for those it cannot deal with properly. Toast will warn you that there is an "unknown driver" installed, and that some features will not be available. The "Mount CD-ROM" command will not work, multisession CDs might not mount at all, audio extraction might not work, etc. However, recording should work fine. Unfortunately there is no good way to work around this, other than booting with extensions off. The next version of Apple CD-ROM will no longer cause these problems.(from Macintosh Resource Page)
Adobe Premiere
There is a bug in Premiere in which editing a large file can crash the system. Adobe is aware of the problem. (from MacFixit)
Corel WordPerfect
There is a bug in WordPerfect which renders MacLinkPlus inoperable with that application. WordPerfect is aware of the bug and is working on an updater. (from MacFixit)
Symantec Norton Utilities
After running the Norton Disk Doctor component of Norton Utilities 3.2 - 3.2.3, the Norton Disk Doctor's report files will not be shown because they are "corrupted." The updater to NU 3.2.4 fixes the problem. There is also a Read Me that goes along with the updater.

The PowerBook 3400c is a laptop computer in the PowerBook line manufactured by Apple Computer from February to November 1997. It was, briefly, the swiftest laptop in the world. Using the PowerPC 603e processor running at speeds of up to 240 MHz, this PowerBook was the first to feature a PCI architecture, EDO memory, and a 64-bit wide, 40MHz internal bus. It was also the first PowerBook to feature a PC card slot capable of being used as a zoomed video port. Like all Apple laptops since the PowerBook 500 series, it featured a built-in trackpad as the pointing device.

The Power Macintosh 5400 series (also sold under variations of the name Performa 5400) is a range of lower midrange personal computers that are a part of Apple Computer's Power Macintosh and Macintosh Performa families of Macintosh computers. The 5400 is an all-in-one computer with an integrated monitor, and replaced the Power Macintosh 5200 line in that role. It is largely identical to the Power Macintosh 6400 internally, which is essentially the same computer (the "Alchemy" platform) in a tower case. The 5400 was succeeded by the upgraded Power Macintosh 5500.
The Power Macintosh 5500 – code-named "Phoenix" – was produced by Apple Inc. between February 1997 and early '98 and came with an IBM PowerPC 603ev processor operating at either 225, 250 and 275 megahertz (MHz). The processor made use of 32 kilobytes (KB)[4] of L1 cache, with an option for a 256 or 512 KB L2 cache (the latter being available only on the 275 MHz model) cache operating at the stock 50 MHz bus speed.
The Power Macintosh 6500 (Codename: "Gazelle") is a mid-range desktop computer in Apple Computer's Power Macintosh series. It was introduced in February 1997 in speeds of 225 and 250 MHz, replacing the very similar Power Macintosh 6400. In April 1997, two faster models at 275 and 300 MHz were added. The 6500 was discontinued in March 1998, with the Power Macintosh G3 minitower remaining as the only similar model. The Power Macintosh 5500 uses the same logic board in a 5200 style all-in one case.

The Power Macintosh 8600 (Codename: "Kansas") is a personal computer that is a part of Apple Computer's Power Macintosh series of Macintosh computers. It was introduced at a processor speed of 200 MHz in February 1997 alongside the Power Macintosh 7300 and the Power Macintosh 9600. It replaced the Power Macintosh 8500. In August 1997, the original model was replaced with two faster ones, at 250 and 300 MHz. The 8600 was discontinued in February 1998, in favour of the Power Macintosh G3 minitower that had been introduced in November 1997.
The Power Macintosh 9600 (Codename: "Kansas"; also sold with additional server software as the Apple Workgroup Server 9650) is a personal computer that is a part of Apple Computer's Power Macintosh series of Macintosh computers. It was introduced in February 1997 alongside the Power Macintosh 7300 and the Power Macintosh 8600, and replaced the Power Macintosh 9500 as Apple's flagship desktop computer. It was the last Macintosh model able to boot and run Mac OS 7 natively.

I added *untested* Mac OS 7.6 System Software for PowerBook 1400. I hope it works!
Hey guys I really hate to be a bother again but on the Mac OS 8.0 page someone has done the same thing where it will only work with an emulator. Could someone help me by fixing it please?
thanks a ton you guys. You are awesome. I am going to make sure to never lose this haha
I have replaced the old one (MacOS76_floppy.zip) with the new one (MacOS76_floppy.sit), same contents but different archive format.
I'm fairly certain there is an Apple CD here containing system floppy install sets in Disk Copy
4.26.x.x format (includes SSW 7.6). The name of it escapes me tho'. Perhaps Fortuna knows the one I mean.Failing this, I can convert those in the zip file to Disk Copy 4.2 format and they'll be pretty much identical to the original. Just give me an hour or so.
[Edit]: Looks like Fortuna has helped out, so no need for me to now.
[Edit 2]: Remembered the CD with install floppy disk images; Apple Legacy Software Recovery CD. It has most if not all of the system floppy disk install sets, including 7.6 as Disk Copy 6 image files.
I've replaced the zipped one with the StuffIt 5.x archive one.
do you know of an archive that has them mountable on a real mac?
Hello 9646gt. The file "MacOS76_floppy.zip" contains the floppy images that can be only mountable in emulators.
Thanks for helping me see that I am not just going crazy! I really need to find a download os 7.6 floppy images in english for my IIsi. Do you have ANY idea where I can find them? Even emailing if you don't want to disclose it here would be fine but I have got to find these
@9646gt: See my edited reply below.
I have unzipped the main zip file with maczip with the same result. It creates a folder full of the .dsk images but no program seems to work with them. When I use desktop plus or pro and I click open image and select the fold with the dsk images in it nothing appears (as if it's not seeing ANY compatibles files). Also just dragging the .dsk image onto the disk copy 6.3.3 says "mount image operation did not complete" -8816 the file (insert filename) does not have a recognized file type. Could you maybe download the 20mb zip file and see how it behaves for you?
[Edit] Please ignore what I wrote below. I've looked at the archive "MacOS76_floppy.zip (20.93 MB)" and the expanded .dsk files are not compatible with anything in a classic Mac OS, nor can I determine what created them in the first place.
The only success I've had at mounting them is by dragging them into a Mini vMac emulator's window running Mac OS 7.1 and they do mount as disks onto a desktop in that way.
While it is possible, via Mini vMac to recreate these mounted floppy disk images with Disk Copy 6.x or ShrinkWrap 2.1 or DiskDup+ to be used elsewhere. Its not an ideal situation.
I think this archive needs to be replaced with one that hasn't been bastardized in this fashion.
Its very likely that they've been zipped using MacZip on a classic Mac OS. MacZip is available here at the Garden if you want to try unzipping them again.Other Zip capable programs including Stuffit Expander won't extract and restore the File & Creator Types of these extracted zip files correctly. I think that you'll find that they're actually DiskDup+ files with the Creator & File Types info not restored.Try dragging the unzipped icons as is, onto a Disk Copy 6.3 application icon or alias and letting the mouse go. That should mount them OK even without the restored File & Creator Types.Ok guys I need some help. I downloaded the 7.6 floppy images zip and have tried extracting with both stuffit and maczip. Both complete and give me .dsk images. DiskCopy 6.3.3 says it's not a recognized file type. ShrinWrap shows a progress bar quickly and then vanishes with nothing else appearing when I try and mount or write to disk. Disk copy 4.2 will not even show the desk files. Disk Dup doesn't work either. What am I doing wrong? I am doing all the work inside os 9.2.2 on a g3 ibook.
My personal library is here:
http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/macos-install-cd-library
Ugh, all the Classic OS links are removed.
Trying to convert the image using Disk Utility? Checksum is broken so you need to skip the verify step
Every link on this page is broken
Could you PLEASE re-upload all of the files? Cause Mediafire apparently removed all of them, I'm sad to say.
akenaton_valis, look in the OS Anthology 1999 in this website. You can find the Italian versions here.
Anyone has this release in Italian ?

ive seen this problem all over this site: removed due to high bandwidth costs. any idea when this problem will be solved? geez, between that and games bein removed from the site, its gettin too hard to download software.
Thanks for posting that - I didn't know that Rhapsody's missing parts was because of Hard disk failure, and I thought the G3 Blue and White disc would be in English. Oh well. I am happy with the Beta operating systems posted there though.
From emaculation, yksoft1 PM last October:
I could remember back in 2008 I had uploaded all those files to Mediafire, and they may have deleted a lot of files there because of lacking downloads.
Power Macintosh G3.iso is a Simplified Chinese OS 8.5 disc for blue white G3. I may upload this to another place if you want.
for RhapsodyDR2, I'm sorry but my original ISO file was lost in a hard drive crash.
I found a few good things, but the one i am stuck with is OS 8.5.1. I cannot extract them. I have Aladdin Expander 5 on my PC, and cannot extract them, because they are in *.sit.1, *.sit.2 and *.sit.3 files. How would I extract them?
... the uploader of the files on that site did not take much care in uploading the parts of the OSes in full (Every OS in zip parts seems to be missing the middle part).
Sorry , I posted that link,
but I said from the beginning, that I found that link out of a Chinese website, so it's not mine,
Actually I tested all the programs of the folder "Old Software" and everything works fine,
but I didn't check the OS's 'cuz I didn't need them.
and that's why I said :
still, it has good stuff.
Is it really? Well, why did I waste my time at that site to realize that everything is incomplete (Power mac g3 restore disc only has Part 1,2,3,4,5 and 7, and Rhapsody only has parts 1,2 and 4 :@) Is there any other sites that has the resources that the mediafire site, that are not incomplete?
can any one give a download link mac os 9.2 iso
I found this link sometime ago, I downloaded and tested almost all the software,
(ALL the software I've tested so far runs fine)
there are Mac OS 7, 8 and 9 installs there (and a lot of good programs)
so it's almost like a self-serve Mac Buffet..

Thanks

Haydon B or HBeagley
This Does not work I tried it and it sayed this file is damaged and should be used with caution and I would of liked this file in .iso because them I would be able burn it to a CD and be able to install it from a CD!
HBeagley
Thank You So Much Who Ever Uploaded This OS CD, My Performa Is Due For A New HDD and Now I Can Install A OS On The New HDD When I Get It!! Thank You Again! Haydon
I noticed this issue at the time with black & white BattleChess and Deluxe Music Construction Set.
For running very old Mac games try using Mac OS 7.5
Support for many Mac Plus games was discontinued after 7.5

@Balrog,
I still use my MDD (over my Mac Pro). I can ftp the MDD OS9.2.2 disk image up if you want. Too large for the 400MB limit, but surely the FTP will allow it. Any preferred format ?
I have those too!
What I am looking for, though, is the OS 9.2.2 discs for eMac and the newest MDD G4's. These are hard to get.
Thank you for uploading this!!!! I have been looking for this for a long time. . . . . . . . . now if only somebody uploaded mac os 8.0 cd and floppy images
