Prince of Persia 1 & 2 Manuals

Hey guys,
First post here, I landed with quite a few good complete games with manuals. I realize that the game POP is preserved on this site but the copy protection is on a single page. I have the actual manuals to POP 1 & 2. If I scan them can they be posted to the game pages for nostalgic reasons? Will scan a nice PDF if possible. Will check back in to see if there is any demand. Thank you.

Well done scans are always welcome methinks. Best check whether something is already available at replacementdocs.com before plunging into scanning. POP Original and POP Shadow & Flame seem to be there including the DOS/Mac manual.

IIRC http://macintoshgarden.org/games/prince-of-persia played best with FusionPC_3.0 (MacOS 7.0.1) 256 colors and sound.

replacementdocs.com , checked here they have the same one sheet pdf. I am talking about the whole booklet that comes in the original box. I didn;t see it there can someone check if it's available elsewhere before I start? because I couldn't find it online. Also if I scan it, can the moderator upload it to the manuals? One last thing the manual for http://macintoshgarden.org/games/prince-of-persia is not in english. I have one in really good condition in english.

@naveed: If you want to scan these to PDF and upload here, I think would be excellent.

You can add them to the page at any time yourself. You only need to click the "Edit this page" link near the top right of a page and you'll be given a screen where you can add files, edit the text, etc.

Caveat, with regards to uploading manuals is that these pages are hard-coded to show only one manual. You can still upload several manuals, a workaround is that once you upload additional manuals, copy the link to each and add the link manually into the Description area of the page while in edit mode.

Note: in the Comments section of the PoP page you linked above, soudesune back in 2011, added scans of the entire 1st PoP manual (he didn't link to it in the page Description) but he gives the direct link in his post in the Comments section of that page.

soudesune's scan of the manual isn't the greatest as its only jpgs scans in a .sit archive and not collated into a PDF. I'm sure your addition would be a superior addition here.

I notice too on the PoP page you linked to above, someone also has added several more files to that page, uploaded as manuals, these extra files are cheats and level editors!

Because they got uploaded into the manuals section (which has a 1 item only constriction), they will never be seen by someone simply visiting the page.

MikeTomTom, that is exactly the kind of answer I was looking for. I scanned a hi res pdf for POP2. I did use the edit this page feature as your instructed. Now you can download the full manual when you click on 'manual'. The one pager is still there also but I made mine go before it Wink I will do the same for POP 1st part if there isn't one. Hope I am doing the right thing!

Hi naveed. Thanks for the scans. A couple of issues I see with them are:

Both PDF's are incompatible with Acrobat 5.x or earlier (error 109) which means they will fail on a Classic Mac OS. They are version 1.3 PDF so they should open OK in Acrobat 4 or newer. The program you used to create the PDF's (Simple Scan?), is possibly using JPEG2000 to optimize the image compression. If you can in its settings, use a basic (non-JPEG2000) JPEG compression, this may help prevent those 109 errors and these would then likely be able to be viewed on a classic Mac OS system too.

You also bumped off the one-page "potion-codes" that occupied the "Manual" position in PoP 1. Aren't these required for playing PoP 1? I don't know as I've not played this game. A link to it in the Description area of the page would be good, as the potion-codes are now unavailable to anyone but registered users (I'll do this next).

Anyway, its great to have these manuals scanned. So thanks for doing this.

You know I wasn't thinking about Classic Mac OS compatibility. I don't even think that I have the necessary equipment to keep my pdf 100% classic mac compatible. The program I am using 'Simple Scan' doesn't let me change any JPEG compression. I did bump the page because the potion codes are derived from the manual. The copyright protection questions are such "The 1st letter of 2nd paragraph on page 7". The one-page was the answers to all such questions.

So, I will reverse the changes I made so the non-registered users can have access to the one page potion-codes. Next scan I will try to see if I can keep Classic MacOS compatibility.

naveed: No. change it back, change it back Done (see Edit 2 below) Smile

I put a link to the Potion Codes in the page Description field of PoP 1, earlier. That should be good enough. Your PDF manual is much better suited where it was in the Manual spot, numero uno.

What OS are you running when creating the PDF's?

The PDFs are good as is, I don't think it matters that much if they can't be viewed on earlier versions of Acrobat as most folks will have modern systems and more recent PDF readers as well as their running older systems. I was just pointing it out - that they are version 1.3 PDF format (which is Acrobat 4.0 ) and therefore should be viewable -in Acrobat 4.0 or newer. Are you sure there's no settings you can change to re-JPEG compression?

[Edit] and you've swapped around the PoP 2 PDFs again also. Yours is definitely the better scan - you should leave it where it was in the top Manual spot.

You can put links to other manuals in the page Description area. In the Edit page, its located just under the uploaded pics (if any). Not down in the Comments section, as these can get buried by additional comments. Note how I have done this for the Potion Codes in the Description area of PoP 1.

[Edit 2] I've swapped the PDFs around so that yours again occupy the top Manual DL for both PoP 1 & 2. Yours are the better scans and should occupy this position. I have also linked the Potion Codes and the French language scan into their respective Description areas of both PoP 1 & 2, so you don't need to (and they are still available to all).

Hey Mike thank you for doing that. Now I fully understand how to handle a situation like this. Thank you for showing me the ropes in here because I would have done it in the comments section and you're right that gets buried. Will ask for your feedback on a couple others soon hope you don't mind! Laughing out loud I am using Ubuntu Linux 13.04 and simple scan comes pre-packaged with it. I will try to see if I can get an opensource scan prog that lets me change the JPEG compression as you advised, also will look into converting if possible. As always thank you for the detailed replies!

Hi naveed: YW. The PDF viewer I've used to look at your PDFs informs me that you are using "Simple Scan version 3.6.1"

There is a post here to a Simple Scan forum, where a person is asking how to change the image compression settings in Simple Scan.

The reply (answer #2) was that this issue has been fixed in Simple Scan 3.9.2
So maybe you only need to update your current version in Ubuntu.

gscan2pdf might also be an alternative you can use.
