Problem with Iomega Zip and Mac Performa 6116

When i connect the iomega zip drive to scsi port of my performa 6116 the computer freezes. I reset it and it shows only a grey screen and the cursor. When i disconnect the scsi zip cable from the scsi port of the performa the computer works again. What can i do?

Disconnect your SCSI Zip drive and install SCSI Probe onto your Mac. This won't sort out your problem, but it will give you a clue as to what SCSI device is using which SCSI ID# on your Mac (and get to see what SCSI ID#'s are actually free to use). Also, even look at the screenshot on the SCSI Probe page for a clue to setting your Zip drives SCSI ID#.

By default, the Mac CPU will be ID 7, a primary SCSI HD will be ID 0, and if there is a CD drive present, it will be ID 3. All other ID's (1,2,4,5,6) will be free to choose from.

Reconnect your Zip drive cables to the Mac and assign a free ID# to your external Zip drive. If it is the last (or only) SCSI device connected to your Mac, make sure it is terminated, too.

Crossing your fingers at boot time up may also help Wink

There should be 2 switches on the back of the zip drive. One lets you set the SCSI ID. On the zip drive, you only have 2 choices, SCSI ID 5 or 6. There is also a second switch that lets you turn termination on or off. Make sure you turn termination ON if the zip drive is the only external scsi device or is the last scsi device if you have multiple scsi devices attached.

You may also have an extension conflict. Here is a iomega troubleshooting page for how to test for extension conflicts:

http://www.iomega.com/support/manuals/zip2s/trblshoot.html#conflict

The only other thing I can think of is to see if there is a newer version of the iomega software.

Hi,
What version of the system software are you running? 7.5.5?
You might try using Extension Manager (if you have it) and seeing if the system starts with just that extension alone. I wonder whether a lower version of the driver would help: 5.0 or 4.2 even.

Do let us know how you get on.

I run mac os 8.1 and 7.6.1. Firstly i tried to install version 4.2 of iomega but a msg appeared that couldn't find any zip drive connected. Then i installed the 5.5.1 version. At this time when the zip drive is connected to the computer's scsi port everything freeze. Only the cursor moves and when i click with the mouse on a folder or on the finder nothing happes. If i reset the computer it does not start. It only shows a grey screen. When i disconnect the cable the computer starts to work again!. I checked the back of the iomega zip drive. It doesn't have a switch for on/off.

Try connect the SCSI cable alone to the Performa, just to rule out a faulty cable or connector.
Then check the back of the Zip. It should be 2 pair of switches; one setting a ID number and the other switch to terminate the SCSI chain.
And one last question; not implying you´re stupid or anything: this is a SCSI Zip and not a Parallel port Zip?

I connected the cable alone and everything work ok. The back of the zip drive has two ports. One for the zip drive and one for the connection of other scsi external device . No switches at all. It is like the up one of this picture. http://www.google.gr/imgres?q=zip+drive+100mb+back&um=1&hl=el&sa=N&biw=1...

I see also from the apple system profiler that id=3 is for cd, id=6 is for hard disk (i have made two partitions, one for mac os 7.6 and one for mac os 8.Innocent and id=7 is for cpu. The question is...how can i assign a free ID# for the zip drive?

That choice should be a switch on the actual SCSI device (your Zip drive). External SCSI Zip drives came with two switches, one to give the SCSI ID - either 5 or 6 (I did mention looking at that pic on the SCSI probe page for a clue to that) and another switch to toggle SCSI termination to On or Off (very important) depending on the devices position in the SCSI chain...

http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=144810. If you see this pic i have the up device which doesn't have switches. That's why i don't know what to do Smile

Then I am sorry for you, as that upper one is for a PC (parallel port) and it is not SCSI. The top device in the picture shows a printer icon to the right, denoting a PC's parallel port. The lower device in the picture is the SCSI version and clearly shows the switches for it that you should have. It also shows the SCSI icon on the upper right-hand side of the device.

There is nothing you can do to use this on your Mac. Perhaps your best choice is to re-sell (if you don't have a PC you could use this on), but do inform your purchaser of the difference.

The seller named it as a parallel drive but i didn't know the difference. I will see if i can use it on my pc at my work.

Once upon a time there was a serial to parallel converter from GDT for printers.
Mike will know what I´m talking about. Will not be hunted down easily, I presume.
