restore disk set for powerbook G3 pismo

Hi Guys, I've just acquired a powerbook G3 pismo laptop which needs a little care and attention. nothing serious, just a hdd upgrade and ram.

Does anyone here have the original restore set CD's either to download directly or through the site. the nearest thing I can find on here is an iBook G3 install cd (not full restore) as I'd like to do a full refurb on it and mount outspoken screen reader to give to a student in need of a working laptop as part of free macs for the blind.

if anyone can help, I'd love to hear from you.
Please email free...@mac-access.net

also if someone has as a spare part an apple dvd rom drive from a powerbook G3. note that this is the hot swap drive type. Needed as the original drive to this laptop is damaged and unusable as the main cover and switch had been removed by the previous owner. if anyone has a part like this or the floppy drive / zip drive and is willing to donate, please get in touch. this would allow the laptop to go out fully working.

Cheers to all

I have got "iBook Mac OS9 Install" Mac OS version 9.2.1, CD version 1.3, part number 691-3427-A from 2002.
I bought the disk from ebay many years ago and it was fine for my iMac.
You probably got that one already, as it is on Mediafire.

All I've got is the Lombard original discs, well images of, as I gave the originals away, with the PBG3, years ago to a charity looking for Macs too Smile ).

Does anyone have anything better ?

I have a Pismo myself, complete with the CDs. I might be able to share it with you, but it's in German. Dunno if the OS can be installed from that CD in any other language.

it's worth a try. I believe that OS restores are mylti lingual if I'm right. might not be.

the lombard disc may help as the lombard and pismo are similar machines.

Can you upload it please macwrench, upload to MediaFire including the discs I requested for you?

Hi macwrench, that would be great.

I am in the process of upgrading the powerbook pismo. just installed 768mb ram from a donor powerbook g4 ti dead, a 60gb drive from the same machine. Have tried a few of the 9.2 cd images here and they all fail to boot. I have the original HD as well but there's a bug in OS9 where the finder is acting strangely. i.e the finder has to be force quit and restarted to work normally.

if you could either mediafire them or something like that I'd really appreciate it.

please could you email me at free...@mac-access.net

cheers

Prismos need Mac OS 9.0.4 or 9.1 (depending on the time of delivery of the Prismo model). The Lombard restore CD is Mac OS 8.6 and therefore probably will not boot a Prismo. Also, Prismos had FireWire, Lombards had SCSI. If you open these machines you will notice that they are not similar at all. Only the outward appearance is the same.

Hi macwrench, I know you have many discs so uploading the CD images to Medafire would be nice.

the good news is this... I finally have the pismo 500 firing on all cylinders.. it's taken a long time to do and I have had to use an external firewire DVDRW to do this. it's time consuming. used a retail OS 9.2.1 installer, set up for that machine, installed some decent software from here and it's going good. The snag is, I want to dual boot with OS X 10.4 which it supports, however it hates firewire installations. so this leaves me in stage 2. a machine without a working internal DVD Rom drive for a pismo. Can anyone help me on that part? if someone has a pismo DVD rom drive spare and is happy to spare it, please let me know. Once again a huge thanks for the help and to the software on this site. it's a life saver.

a good piece of software I have come across for older mac CD's to be burnt is BURN. it's an opensource CD burning app which works in OS X very well indeed. allows HFS standard and HFS + burning, etc and helps a heck of a lot.

Did you install Mac OS X 10.4 first and partitioned the HD from the Mac OS X CD? If not, try this. If you partition the HD from your Mac OS 9.2.1 CD, installing or booting Mac OS X after this might give you problems.

installation of OS X has been challenging but here's the fix.....

from OS 9.2.2, ensuring firmware is up to date, do a clean install of OS X 10.1 and update it. this opens up a component in firmware and updates it further. From there, it's straight to 10.3 CD edition. sorted (via external firewire drive). now updating and installing 10.4 again via firewire drive.

the dvd drive in the machine should be resolved with a generic drive upgrade using the sled from this drive with the adaptor. so this thing should be firing on all cylinders. the annoying part is not having a spare 2nd 512mb pc133 stick of ram. this could then be pushed to 1gb ram.

oh well. the things we do for a job.

PS I'd like to say thanks to you all for your help so far. it's a pleasure to be here. sadly I'm not much use as a software contributor as I rarely deal with OS9 anymore and the systems I deal with are X based, etc.
