Stuffit to open games in MiniMac

I am am trying to open a game in Mini vMac:
macintoshgarden.org/games/mines

Background info: Using Windows Vista with Mini vMac to play a MacPlus game from 1988.

Installing vMac was fine (installed the system startup files for 6.08 onto a new blank disk and dragged the disk onto the emulator screen). I tried using HFVExplorer to put the extracted game files onto a disk (the file inside the .sit archive is not an .img file it has no extension) but get the "application is busy..." error which apparently is the result of using StuffIt on my computer instead of inside the emulator to extract the files.

I put StuffIt 4.00 onto a disk and tried to install in on vMac, it asks where to install but fails no matter what location I choose. (The only folder is the 'System' folder). Am I on the right track? If StuffIt can be installed somehow, would it then correctly extract a .sit file on a .dsk? It's been about 6h and I've read the forums and documentation, but my mac naivete is killing me. Thanks for your help!

A disk is only 1.4 mb in size, so stuffit will not install because there is not enough room. A virtual hard disk would work, or so I believe. Use HFVExplorer to create a New Volume, About 20 mb should do. Then mount it in vMac and install Stuffit there.

Thanks. When I installed everything onto the 024M.dsk (in the blank disk collection) it worked perfectly.

A new problem is that StuffIt does not see the .sit files I put on the same disk - so I can't expand them obviously. (I can see them looking at the disk). Any tips?

Solution #1: Try setting the "Watch Folder" in the StuffIt Expander Preferences to wherever you keep the .sit files - "File->Expand" will only let you choose (SITD, SIT!) files to expand, but StuffIt Expander will check every file in the "Watch Folder" for a StuffIt archive header and expand the files in the Watch Folder that have a StuffIt archive header even if they are not assigned type code "SITD" and creator code "SIT!" (which HFVExplorer doesn't assign type codes and creator codes when importing to HFS disk images unless you "map" file extensions to those codes)
Solution #2: After you import a .sit file into your disk image using HFVExplorer, right-click on the imported .sit file in your disk image, click "Options", then change "Type" to "SITD" and "Creator" to "SIT!" and click "OK".

According to a thread on emaculation.com, it seems possible that someone created the .sit file with StuffIt 5, which makes it invisible to StuffIt 4. I quote, "Basically, if you need Stuffit 5 to expand the file but you've only got Mini vMac, then you are screwed. You'll have to get someone to send you a disk image containing the expanded file or set up Basilisk II and do it yourself. No working around that."

If anyone fancies putting macintoshgarden.org/games/mines on disk i'd be greatful. otherwise i guess i'll give baselik a go. cheers.

Yep. Thats the problem with Stuffit. I would gladly put Mines on a disk for you. My Mac SE30 has both Stuffit 4 and 5 on it. Unfortunately, I will be moving tomorrow, and all my Macs are packed up. I can send you an email with a .dsk file with Mines on it sometime tomorrow or Sunday.

I've repackaged what was here and put Mines into a macbinary wrapper. Have tested this as OK to extract on Mini vMac using Stuffit Expander 3.5.1 on System 6.0.8, so you should be good to go with this. See temporary download link on Mines page.

Not having seen MikeTomTom's post which solved the problem, I went ahead and added "Mines" to our collection of ready-to-go collection "System 6 Hell." It is over here:

Just want to say thanks to all of you for your quick responses and help. I did have a problem with MikeTomTom's bin file - when attempting to use HFV Explorer (on Windows) to put the .bin file on disk it claimed the file was not a valid macbinary file (but I wouldn't put it past me to have made a mistake). That said, the expanded game watchsmart provided works like a charm and made my day.

Those .bin files might be encoded using MacBinary II+ or MacBinary III, which HFVExplorer can't decode, but StuffIt Expander 4.00 can decode MacBinary II+ files and StuffIt Expander 4.0.2 and later can decode MacBinary III files. When you import the .bin file into your disk image, use "Raw copy, data fork" for importing, then set the "Watch Folder" in the StuffIt Expander Preferences to the folder in the disk image where you keep the .bin files.

Hi damien. The file is valid macbinary. When using HFVExplorer to move any file from a Windows directory into a Mac drive file, its safer to choose "Raw copy, data fork" from the pull-down list in the dialog when you try to move a file over. You will get 100% better results that way.
