Stuffit v5 compatibility

I've seen some complaints about not being able to Stuff things in OSX for compatibility with StuffIt 5 in classic, and I don't think it's quite accurate to believe that. For instance, I'm certain StuffIt v7, which works in OSX (PPC) makes compatible archives. The key is that you have to check the preferences and make sure it's checked for "faster" and not "better" compression. "Faster" simply means it is compressed using the older method. I could probably upload some version of StuffIt 7 but I've been holding off as I'm uncertain as to whether I really should, since it's an OSX app and still works on relatively recent computers.

Just like in the zip thread, I suggest to do a test. Upload a dummy sit file to some file hosting service, post the link and let Classic users try it out.

In my old ibook which uses 10.3.9, i can choose OS 9 classic as the start up disk, and i use stuffit 7. It works fine. And if i remember correctly, back before i switched to OS X, under my actual OS 9, stuffit 7 was already there.

Everything i uploaded here is stuffed with v7, can't people with OS 9 (not classic) unstuff those files?

The way i see it, if its an emulator you'll unstuff under OS X, if it's not an emulator, it's probably OS 9 anyway (who uses 6 or 8 as their real system anymore?) and stuffit 7 works fine anyway...

Many people running emulators in Windows or Linux and therefore can't unstuff the files in OS X. Stuffit 7 is not good for those people.

I'm also running Stuffit 7, it is not backwards compatible down to (enter version number here)?

In the old Mac Garden forum, if I remember right, someone reported files I've uploaded (w/Stuffit 7), are unstuffable with version 5.5 at least.

I use StuffIt Deluxe 7.0.3 or DropStuff 7.0.3 and the archives open up just fine under StuffIt Expander 5.5. I haven't tested earlier versions than that. And there are Windows versions of StuffIt--I have them on the same disc. Let me think a little about what can be uploaded and maybe I can upload some of it for others to test.

Yes, but if you unstuff the files in Windows, they get wrecked and are un-usable in the emulator.

@watchsmart:
If that is so, then the title is so manipulating. Are you sure there is no way out? Call me an optimist but if there is Stuffit for Windows, I guess there is someway to unstuff those files in Windows: I bet somebody will instruct us and say "just click X and they are not wrecked"

@toprak: just use HFVexplorer or similar software to copy the .sit to the emulated disk, then expand within emulation.

Right. It is easy to copy the file over using HFV Explorer, or the My Computer thing or with the Mini vMac tools.

But if the file is Stuffit 7 or ZIP that cannot be extracted IN the classic Mac OS, then the file is useless. Expanding using Stuffit for Windows wrecks the file.

We've already got lots of stuffit 5 archives for old games that can only be played in Mini vMac but cannot be expanded either on Mini vMac or on the host system (these can be expanded in SheepShaver and then played in Mini vMac). Let's not make the situation any worse!

Now I'm just getting confused. Everybody keeps chiming in with unclear statements. If you're having a problem expanding the archives from the Macintosh Garden, post something on that game or app's own page so that others can confirm whether the problem is with the actual archive or whether you're doing something wrong or have some other problem with your system. I've tested all the archives I've personally uploaded and they all open up--ON THE MAC OS--without a problem with any version of StuffIt at least as far back as v5.5. I'm going to upload StuffIt Standard Edition version 7.0.3 for Mac, 8.0 for Windows, and I can confirm that these versions make archives that easily open with Expander 5.5 and possibly with earlier versions--IF YOU SET THE PREFERENCES like I've been asking people to do.

Here's another one that doesn't open:

Half of the files I have tried to test out and create screenshots for over the last month have been un-openable.

Who is uploading these files?

That unstuffs for me using Stuffit Expander 5.5 in Basilisk II.

Yeah I tried it too, on a PowerBook G3 with OS 8.6 and Expander 5.5, worked fine. How exactly is "watchsmart" trying to open it? What hardware/software is being used?

Okay. Perhaps I misspoke on that one, or it was fixed between my posting and yours.

But the point stands: Look at the thread in the other forum for a list of a bunch of files that really do NOT work.

Probably not useful, but here's how to create a .zip that includes resource forks from Terminal:

ditto --rsrc -c -k -X your_file your_file.zip
