What about PPC-Garden?

Many PPC only apps match the Garden´s requirements today:
More than ten years old.
Unsupported by the original publisher or owner.
I see the point of many members here, not to clutter the site with apps not running in OS 1-9.

What can be done?
Knez, Fogwraith, would you mind hosting a blueprint of the Macintoshgarden for PPC files on your mighty server?
A PPC-Garden would be a good place to preserve Mac apps for OSX from 10.0 to 10.5.
Even more, we would avoid the discussion "Is the app XYZ suitable for Macintoshgarden?"
Personally I don´t have much PPC only stuff, as I refused buying a new Mac after the Bondi blue.
Still it would be a shame to see software from that era vanishing in the digital nirwana.

Apple has taken down files prior to 10.4 Tiger seemingly...

Id be for it, as long as we werent breaking any laws and other people requested it. PPC is definately retired and used mainly in last gen game consoles like Wii, Xbox 360 etc. As for pc i dont think its a bad idea,but I dont have the final say in that. Only people who want it and agree its acceptable

Personally, I don't use X in any version more than about 10 hours a YEAR. My Video Library software requires Leopard

So for me, a PPC-specific site would be a waste of time.

Gary.

+1 for PPC software. It's almost ten years since the move to x86 (time sure flies by!) and if you're a remaining ppc user (or having a comeback) you're already having difficulty to find software for your machines.

Not sure if we need another project though. I like the idea of having it all in one Macintosh Garden.

Im fine with whatever you all decide, i appreciate every bit of mac garden and every other abandonware mac site there is... if it wasnt for them we wouldnt have hardly any software.

If host capacity is not a problem I think it's better to make Macintosh Garden a resource for all Mac abandonware rather than creating a separate PPC-only site.

What about PPC-X Garden? Wink
PPC software for Macintosh has been around since SSW 7.1.2

The number of PPC OS X only apps & games coming into the Garden seems to be growing exponentially tho'.

If we can make PPC searchable (separate from the Title) then it would be worth it...

Hi there, im back again, and its really nice to see this site alive and kicking! Smile
I think we need a new sections to store and catalog, not only PPC software but:

•68k
•68k&PPC (FAT)
•PPC only
•PPC Carbonized (8.6 to the 9.2.2 but compatible or executable in early versions of MacOs X)
•MacOs X PPC only (10 -10.5.Cool

lol, im writing this with my G4 Quicksilver... my Intel dies 2 months ago (burn in hell, you piece of crap machine!) so this G4 has seen 2 Intels going down while working side by side of them. So i think my next mac will be a Hackintosh Wink!

Hi MadMac
Today I notice a new criteria on a file's edit page, under heading, "Architecture": "PPC (Carbonized)".

I have no preference for or against segmenting the holdings on this site into different categories. If the consensus is to have a different category for PPC OS X, then why not all the way with MadMac's suggestion...at least that is consistent and does not single out just one category for special treatment. I think the question to ask is "will segmenting the site make it easier to use the Garden?" My view is that the answer is "no", and that it is purely a cosmetic exercise. If we do make different linked areas on the garden for one or more categories, I would still want to be able to search the whole site for files and not just one particular category.

•68k
•68k & PPC (FAT)
•PPC only
•PPC Carbonized (8.6 to the 9.2.2 but compatible or executable in early versions of MacOs X)
•Mac OS X PPC only (10.0 -10.5)

I think a new category added would be the best solution as early Mac OS X software was usually carbonized versions of original classic Mac OS software, so multiple choice for category would be possible.
Moreover, we could add more categories in the future, when Mac OS 10.6 software will be abandonware and Mac software only available at Mac AppStore.

Maybe a combined choice is better fitted and mor expanable: ARCHITECTURE & SYSTEM_VERSION
ARCHITECTURE = {68k, 68000, 68020, 68030, 68040} AND {68k_FPU_NEEDED}
+ {PPC, MPC601, MPC603, MPC604, G3, G4, G5}
+ {Intel, x86, x86-64}
+ {Universal, PPC, PPC64, x86, x86-64}

SYSTEM_VERSION = {Macintosh System 1, Macintosh System 2, Macintosh System 3, Macintosh System 4, Macintosh System 5, Macintosh System 6, Macintosh System 7, Mac OS 7.5, Mac OS 7.6, Mac OS 8, Mac OS 8.1, Mac OS 8.5, Mac OS 8.6, Mac OS 9, Mac OS 9.1, Mac OS 9.2}
+ {Mac OS X 10.0 Chetah, Mac OS X 10.1 Puma, Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar, Mac OS X 10.3 Panther, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard}

COMPATIBILITY = {Native, 68kOnPPC_Emulator, ClassicOnMacOSX_Emulator, Rosetta_Emulator}
+ {Emulator, BasiliskII, SheepShaver, MESS}

MadMac & Kitchen2010: that's precisely what I wish for since I've a few Mac Classic systems including the Color, but also an iMac G4 with OS X 10.4.1. It's a struggle to find the software that is intended for the right system due to a lack of structure (other than "Games/category" and "Apps/category").

i think that there should be only two more category on the site
Os X games and Os X apps as it will separated the Os 1 to 9 from the Os X
