iBook 3CD 9.2.2 Restore Set - Requires iBook HD with a base OSX install.
Meant to restore Classic function or OS9 boot capability to a disk with only OS X installed.

Download, decompress and burn with Toast or Disk Utility.
There seemed to be issues booting the disks I read with a SATA optical drive in OSX.
So I have redone everything with an IDE optical on a G4 Quicksilver running 9.2.2, using Toast 5.2 to image the disks and DropStuff to compress them. I have verified this worked for 10.0.3 which was giving someone issues.

This is the OS9 Installer for the 1GHz/867GHz TiBooks. I extracted the file labeled 'OS9General.dmg' from the restore disk. The DMG was sloppily built - being a half filled 1GHz container and not subsequently optimized. I converted it to an optimized Toast image, built with Toast 5 Titanium and stuffed with Stuffit 6 (sorry, it is all I had). No installer with this, just drag and drop but any disk burnt from this will boot just fine. Tested with a CDRW on my TiBook and it booted to the Airport Assistant with all the usual shortcuts on the Desktop. It contains MacOS ROM 9.71 for the curious.

If anyone has problems with this, I could try uploading the DMG file. That will not burn to a CDR so you will either need a DVD-R, external FW drive or tinker with the image yourself unless you install from OSX.

When's the last time you tried that link?
I have a feeling Apple is wiping out anything that is PPC related.

The actual restore disks of the 1GHz TiBook would be nice as they are hard to get hold of.

It finally loaded and I added Netboot9 to the page.

Just copy the System Folder across from the Netboot9 image that Apple makes available. That Netboot image shipped with Jaguar Server and the A1025 came with 10.2.3 as on it so it is more or less an up to date version of OS9 and it supports all of the TiBook's hardware. You can copy the Applications and Utilities folders from the retail/restore disk of your choice to complete the set.

I'm having the same problem as Gary with the TiBook 1.0ghz (PowerBook G4 A1025). I just bought one (a good upgrade from the Lombard 400Mhz PowerBook G3 I've been using for 8 years) with the purpose of using it for OS 9. I don't know about using an Installer versus merely copying a System Folder over, but it shouldn't matter to just copy if you know where all the files go, and you can extract them from the Tome on an installer disk anyway (except for the System suitcase where the resources need to be compiled).

Whatever System 9.2.2 you install or copy, what is needed for your specific Mac model is to add the updated versions (and a few additional files maybe) of a few Extensions and Control Panels, and ESPECIALLY the Mac OS ROM file. All these files are part of the Mac OS CPU Software package in all its various versions througout the years. The latest version I've heard of is 5.9; that may be the last ever version. If I could find an install disk or an already-installed System Folder that has a set of files marked with the package Mac OS CPU Software 5.9, then I betcha just copying those over into the TiBook's System Folder would solve the problem of booting OS 9 (9.2.2) on a Titanium PowerBook G4 1.0ghz A1025, or even earlier TiBooks, and getting everything to run properly.

The things that don't work properly mostly seem to relate to peripherals, particularly AV. Extensions (and CDEVs) that relate to the Monitor and Sound, DVD drive, and even Keyboard are mostly the things that are affected. I also notice that I can't put my TiBook to sleep: I get the message "You can't put the computer to sleep because some System software is missing".

BTW, regardless of whether there is a motherboard jumper to disable installation of OS 9 on later Macs or not, you can fool the installer either the same way XPostFacto does (Open Firmware and BootX file) or modify the IncompatHW file in the Upgrader Files folder on the installer CD/DVD, and it'll install on any Mac. Then you can just update the few required files from the Mac OS CPU Software package.

Can you examine the various install disks you have and see if any of them have files from the package Mac OS CPU Software 5.9? Or alternatively, if you have an already-setup System Folder or extracted OS 9 portion of some installer or restore disk (like the QuickSilver disks you extracted), see if those have files from the 5.9 package?

Of course if anyone has actual 9.2.2 install (or "restore") DVDs that came with the 2002-2003 867/1.0g Titanium PowerBook G4 Model A1025 (M8858/M8859), and could post them here that'd be great, but I think there's no need to d/l such a large image when only a few files are needed (those from Mac OS CPU Software 5.9).

Are you sure the internal optical drive is original or at least Apple boot compatible?

The PowerMac G3 CD should be the factory CD.
Just make sure you burn it correctly.
Just unstuff, drag the .toast file to Toast and hit the burn button.
Do not mount the image.

wow i never saw this page before now..
im looking for the original 8.6 install cd for the b&w g3 450mhz (revision 2)
i have already tried one 8.6 cd from another source and it refused to boot for some reason
so im guessing i need the exact version for the b&w in order to get os 8.6 installed!!
i checked max1zzz and he doesnt have it.. he only has 8.5.1 for B&W, which i think is for the first revision g3s.. do u think that the g4 yikes 8.6 cd would work for installing on my machine? the yikes is said to be almost the same motherboard + they both take the same cpu, and share the pci architecture...

I'm getting a "404" error on the CD scan for Mac OS 9, (921.jpg). This will likely need re-upping to the page. It the only image missing out of the above scans, so that's not so bad.

Its really great to see these converted from .dmg, to .toast/.sit and archived here at the Garden. Thank you.

A comment about the Mac OS 7.1 CD image, its not exactly universal. Its for the '040 Macs:
Centris 610, Centris 650 & Quadra 800 models [has System Enabler 040 v1.0].

It can boot some earlier 68k Mac models, if they originally shipped with no System Enabler (such as an '030 IIci). Later model '040 Macs cannot boot up with this CD, nor any other Mac, if it had originally shipped with 7.1 plus machine specific System Enablers.

Its an interesting install CD all the same. It boots up to "At Ease", presenting an easy interface for installing the system. Its At Ease desktop isn't too crippled and it allows easy access to a standard Finder desktop for the more experienced user to install the OS from. Overall its an excellent historic addition.

I have verified that the version of 10.0.3 I have added/replaced on my external download list works.
Should download as "MacOS_10_0_3.toast.sit".

I have replaced the 10.0.3 disk in my external list with one created via Toast 5.2 and DropStuff under MacOS 9.2.2. I will download tomorrow, make CD and see if I can get it to boot on my Wallstreet.

I have scans of my own 10.2 Universal Install CDs (compressed in ZIP format). Although it is a VERY big file (Size: 814.4 MB on disk (814,349,043 bytes) (as reported by Mac OS X Snow Leopard "Get Info" window)), you just might be able to put it up on this page along with the rest.

The only thing I have is the Performa 6200CD (7.5.1 I believe).
http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mac-os-751-performa-6200cd
Not of much use without the 12CDs that came along with it in the Performa Home Package. I tend to stay away from such disks as they are usually just an older OS with enablers to deal with any changes in hardware. As such they tend to be less stable then the following Universal release. So I would always install 8.0, 8.1 or 8.5 on any Performa depending on available RAM and CPU type.

Nice collection, thanks for your work!
Some here may quarrel about the X-files though.

Many (non-bootable) localized OS versions are stored in the two Apple Anthologies on Max1zzz´s server. Maybe an even more versatile source for us foreigners. Smile
