A follow-up to my previous post:

I don't normally run Basilisk II on OS X. So I installed Basilisk II onto a Mac Mini running OS X Leopard... A 2009 build for 10.4 & 10.5 from Emaculation.

I found that the Option key worked OK if editing a text document, but it fails to work at all, if for example, I want to close several open windows at once (Option-click any window's close box). It does nothing at all.

I don't know why it won't work. Key Caps shows it as pressing the Option Key, so I'm at a loss here.

But it did remind me of why I run Basilisk II (build 142) on Windows - That build is most like a real 68k Mac - everything just works

So perhaps I need to try an earlier version of BII that will run on Leopard...

I DL'd the .dmg from the Columbia Edu linked page, above. With this one, the Option Key works correctly.

BTW, the Columbia Edu DL contains Basilisk II plus Performa 630 ROM and a 400 MB disk image file with a pre-installed Mac OS 7.5.5, ready to go. The disk image contains mostly pre-installed versions of Word Perfect (various) and a few utilities. Quite an interesting DL, actually.

The build from Columbia Edu works well in Intel Macs from Leopard and up... (maybe even Tiger (Intel))

Solid TCP/IP support in build 142 on Windows is the primary reason I prefer this over any of the JIT builds on any platform - I can use a static IP address with it and use MacTCP 2x on earlier Mac OS versions as well as Open Transport on newer Mac OS's - Note this is likely broken in 64bit Windows, I'm still on 32bit Windows here.

Chime? As in System startup bong? Yep it does that too. ROM from my old PowerBook 180 has the best sounding chime of those I've tried to date

Installing SSW 7.1 on B2 build 142 is easily done. One thing you do need to keep in mind is that via the build 142 B2 GUI, you can choose to emulate pretty much any type of 68k Mac model.

With Systems 7.1 & 7.1.1, several of the Mac models running these OS's required machine family type specific System Enablers. - You couldn't boot up a Quadra 800 with a 7.1 System Disk Tools floppy disk for an LCIII, for example.

So if you want to emulate some model of Mac Quadra, your SSW 7.1 will likely need to include System Enabler 040, or install the System version of 7.1 or 7.1.1 that already includes a required enabler for the Mac model you wish to emulate.

[Edit] the 3rd DL from top of the 7.1 page here is a very easy install for you. The file to DL; "MacOS71_CD.ZIP" (28.66 MB).

This zip archive contains two .toast files. Of the two, only the enclosed "691-0088 InstallMeFirst CD.toast" is compatible as a bootable disk in B2 build 142, without modification. Once extracted, 1st, rename the .toast extension to .dsk so the B2 GUI can recognize it. Next, lock the disk image so it doesn't get written to once it boots up on B2. Then add it to the list of drives in the B2 GUI.

In B2's GUI, set it to some Quadra model, as this CD has the 040 enabler on board. Quadra 800 is a good choice. The install CD has some form of At Ease on it, but once it boots you can just click the Finder icon in At Ease to get a normal desktop if you'd prefer it before installing the OS.

You will also need to have a drive to install the OS to, which you should create beforehand. Also have a suitable 1MB ROM in place and setup, in the build 142 GUI.

No & it doesn't emulate the "AV" Macs either. Only desktop Macs are in its list of Mac models. Some 30+ Mac models from a IIci to the Quadra 950 and everything in-between.

I run B2 build 142 on a laptop, the host OS handles the book side of things, like sleep and screen dimming.
