File uploads, allowed extensions

In the upload pages, the text

"Allowed Extensions: sit tar.gz tgz dmg hqx bin cdr iso zip sitx img"

could be modified a bit, like (I believe)

"Allowed Extensions: img sit hqx bin tar.gz tgz
Mac OS X games only: dmg sitx
CD images only: cdr iso zip

Please modify my suggestion for other non-Mac standards, like tar.gz, tgz, iso (when are they useful, for example).

On the other hand, I know this will not be recognized by uploaders.

We recently got Chessmaster 2000 in a zip format, which is useless for games created for Mac OS versions up to 9.2 (anyway, I replaced it with an useful format), just because Mac OS versions earlier than Mac OS X can't handle them.

There should be a little message next to the file upload box that has the allowed file types.

I could be wrong but I dont think there is one.

Hmm...tar.gz and tar.bz2 would be useful, but bare iso images (without some compression) take
too much space. Also I've comsideered removing sitx because it's too hard to work with.

I'm not sure about it (for sure I didn't see any files compressed with in Classic Mac OS versions), but I believe I saw it in conclusion with Mac OS X, so my suggestion

Mac OS X games only: dmg sitx

could be extended to

Mac OS X games only: dmg sitx tar.gz tar.bz2

if tar.gz and tar.bz2 are useable in Mac OS X.

@SwedeBear: As far as I remember StuffIt Expander can handle those file types and more (it can even decompress LHA files from the Amiga). However only SIT, BIN and HQX files can preserve resource forks and those should be the preferred file formats for uploading pre-OS X software.

I'm sure there were (rather reliable) utilities for gz / gzip and tar files in OS9.

MacCzip, http://persephone.cps.unizar.es/~spd/gzip/ might not be the one I used all those years ago, but it goes back to SSW 7.

Edit. Replaced 'xxx 7' with 'SSW 7' - IIGS User
MacTar, http://www.strout.net/macsoft/mactar/ for those tar files.

And the 10 000€-question is: which un-/archiver gives the best compress ratio, preserves resource forks and is available in at least OS9? (Preferably in OS <8.6)

That's true, I also think, zip is OK for iso or toast images (of all kind, also Mac OS 9 game cd images), I've uploaded such files in the past: KQ7, Torin's Passage, and some others.

This would be really great. Things should be kept as simple as possible.

Even the version of Stuffit used to compress the .sit files COULD be considered. It's a bit too late now, but it would be great if games that can only be played in Mini vMac can actually be expanded in Mini vMac!

(the old Mac Garden had this same headache).

There's SIT v3, SIT v5, and SIT v8. SIT v3 (use Stuffit 4 or older) works on Mini vMac, while SIT v5 works on most other 68k and PPC emulators / newer Macs.
SIT v8 should not be used.

For what is wort I use version 5.5 for stuffing games intended for Mac OS 7 and up. For games intended for System 6 I use version 4.
