Installing OS 8.6

Hey,

I just recently picked up a rev. 2 Wallstreet G3 Powerbook which came with Mac OS 10.2.8 installed and no Classic Environment. The goal is to bump the OS back to 8.6 but in order to do that I seem to need the Classic Environment installed first. I have a *copy* of a OS 9.2.1 CD but obviously this can't be installed without Classic to open the installer file, nor can I convince the computer to boot off of either a OS 8.6 or the 9.2.1 discs.

Something of a chicken or the egg problem.

Is there any way I can work around this and get a Classic Mac OS back on the computer?

no, you just need the original disks, or an os8.6 install disk. I have one for the Lombard, International English, but someone with a WallStreet install / restore CD would be better.

Can you re-upload the Lombard disc? What is the part number for the CD?

Thanks guys. I'll give the restore disc a try whenever you have it up. It certainly seems like a better bet than several of my other attempts.

EDIT: It just occurred to me that the PowerBook does attempt to open the Classic Environment when I insert old software but it complains that it can't find the installation. Clearly it had been installed (and the seller sold it to me on the basis that it had a Classic installation). Would it be at all possible to move over the System folders manually to the appropriate directory?

Does Mac OS 8.6 run under "Classic" in OS X 10.2.8? I was under the impression that you would have to have 9.1 or newer.

A wallstreet will certainly boot into 8.6 natively but I'm not so sure that it can be used as the Classic OS under X. I could be wrong tho, just unsure about it.

No, you're spot on, you need OS 9.1 at least. But OS 8.6 can be booted into with OS X also on the hard disk, You'll need to copy the OS9.1 (or later) Startup Disk Control Panel back into OS8.6 for OS8.6 to pick up the OS X boot volumes.

Hmmm... Think I would have at least two bootable partitions on that drive, with an 8.6 & 10.2.x set-up (and a OS 9.1.x install on the 10.2.x partition, just to run Classic).

No, if you just want to use the Classic environment is shouldn't matter where the system folder is located.

I tried out the Lombard disc and although it looks really promising it looks like the PowerBook won't boot off of discs, any discs, period. The problem doesn't appear to be with the CD drive - it reads and copies from CDs just fine - so I'm going to try swapping out the RAM over the next day or two.
