My RapidShare account

In reference to other threads, I agree that RapidShare is now almost unusable. I don't regard slow download speeds as an issue..you just wait long enough and learn to be patient. But not being able to download at all (albeit above 150 MB) without paying is another matter. My RapidShare account is up for renewal on 21st January. In view of the very limited usability that RapidShare now imposes, I have reluctantly decided not to renew the account when it is due, unless new mitigating information comes to light. As a consequence 275 GB of files on RS will disappear…not something I want, but if they are almost inaccessible anyway then it makes little difference. Obviously I will stop refreshing my links to files on RS as I have been doing over recent days. If anyone can give me good reasons not to take this course of action, then I am very open to persuasion. It is sad that it has come to this Sad . In due course, I will take out an account with another file server to receive my uploads (not sure which), but it will not be Mega as I want the files to be accessible to members who have older browsers. I will not be re-uploading my files on RS to my new account, apart from a few exceptions, so It is up to others to step up to the mark and make files of interest available. Here we go again...

I would hate to see all these files disappear forever. If you make an account at another filehoster, perhaps you can use a remote upload function (= server to server file transfer) to save your file collection from rapidshare to the new account. As far I know Shareonline used to offer the possibility to remote upload from rapidshare and some other hosters, but that was before rapidshare re-launch, I do not know if is broken since or still working.

Most filehosters can remote upload links from HTTP and FTP servers. So if you have a good internet connection and enough disk space, you could try to download all files from your rapidshare account to a server on the internet or your home PC and set up a little private ftp server (if have an Unixoid OS, the OS should provide the functionality) and let the new hoster remote upload from this computer.

Maybe the guy "Knez" in this thread could provide temporally some help on this procedure server-wise, if we ask him.

I feel with you mrdav. Its sad to see all the stuff go offline.
Private servers seem to be the only way to go, as Max and Knez already pointed out more than once.
Lets hope you will find it possible to move your stuff to a safe place finally.

Storage is not a problem. I keep a copy of all the files on my hard disk. A private server for our purposes, and originating from me, is out of the question as my ISP would react badly. Of course, what we really need is for the Garden itself to provide a permanent solution so that all files uploaded can be accessed without size restriction.

This is EXACTLY what I have suggested, but I havent gotten any real response from balrog or maedi. Me and fogWraith have a kick-ass server pretty much standing idle at the moment, waiting to be filled with old Mac awesomeness. The server is located somewhere in Sweden on a 100/100 fiber internet connection.

We hosted all our stuff ourself on MacDomain from 2003 to earlier this year when we closed MD.

We are here and we want to help, we just need to get the GO signal from the admins here.

Thanks for every previous and future archived upload, mrdav. Thanks too for not going the mega route. Sad to say, it does look like RS has had its day, a pity because I didn't mind using RS until very recently.

MG permanent solutions? Perhaps re-introduce the "Donations" button?
An interesting old thread here and here WRT getting a new server, etc...

Best strategy, as I already said in some other thread, would be, in my opinon, to have all files on a private extra server archived and to copy them to one good (= reliable, fast) extern file-hoster for user downloads. (Amazon S3 for small files, for the huge files something like e.g. Mega, UbuntuOne, uploaded, …)

If some filehoster dies or gets unusable again, you can easiliy replace the links on that filehoster by copying archived files on the private server on another new filehoster again and replace the links.

That solution would combine safety (safe archived files on private server, will not be lost if reliable backup is made) and accessibility (speed for user downloads on extern filehoster) that would not cost too much maintenance cost as one single public server for all files on MG.

Kenz, why not start by takeing on some of the big archives that have been sitting on cloud hosting? (like mrdav's) i'm sure the maintainers of these archives would be gratefull for some secure hosting
I know your ultimate goal is to provide site wide hosting for everything, but i think that would be a good place to start

Knez, if you do want to take up max1zzz's suggestion of hosting my files that are currently on RS then I can put them all on a pocket hard disk and post them to you if you give me a receiving address. If you give me appropriate access to your server, I am happy to make the new links for MG, and progressively make new links if you will allow me to upload new material to your server.

mrdav: This can be arranged. I will look into it this weekend and keep you posted. Im on IRC 24/7 if you want to interact with me a bit faster than on the forums Smile

This might work as a temporary fix, but I really want the hosting to be integrated with PHP-hashed links to the downloads, so that they can't be hotlinked from other sites. Still, it's a lot less to upload when that time comes if we allready have allmost all the files on our server. Just need to relink them then etc.

I'll keep you posted!

To all: I have more stuff waiting for me to upload. Rather than wait for the proposed arrangement to use Knez's server to be in place, I will begin to upload new stuff to Mega. Sorry to those with old browsers, but I have found that Mega is the easiest to use with the least restrictions. I will create additional links accessible by older browsers once my files are on Knez's server.

Mrdav, you could upload some stuff to me if you want, I can have you access setup in no time (and it's just plain http so will work on anything Wink )

max1zzz: Great! Let's do it. What is the procedure? I need to be able to create links to put on the Garden page for each upload.

well, email me a user / password ans i'll set up a account on the ftp for you to upload
i'll set that to upload to http://files.max1zzz.co.uk/mrdav, so the links will end up as files.max1zzz.co.uk/mrdav/nameof.file

Hi Knez. What is the status of your deliberations?

My RS account is due for renewal in 7 days. I was (re)considering renewing it instead of allowing it to drop back to a free account with a 10 GB storage limit, or deleting, as I originally announced. However the yearly rate is far too high for the limited service RS offer. So I will be deleting most of my RS links in an orderly manner to get it down to 10 GB. If I cannot do this in 7 days I will renew my account for a month only, so that I can complete the task. I will delete RS links in the following order: (1) those that have alternate links; (2) those that are archived to the internal server. I am beginning this process now...
