Need CD-ROM?

I've found a number of programs here where after I've got the files unpacked and uncompressed on my Mac's hard drive, running the program produces a message window giving me the choice of inserting the software CD-ROM or quitting.

Is there a general trick for running these programs when you don't have the original sofware CD-ROM? Will it work if I burn the disk image files on a CD-R and run from that?

For a software virtual CD drive use the "Virtual CD/DVD-ROM Utility" from here. It is excellent when used with .ISO compatible CD images.

Failing the Utility working with the image, the alternative is to burn to CD/DVD media.

There is no general trick. It depends on how the software was written. Some applications point to a physical CD-ROM. If the volume is not in a physical CD the software won't start. In that case you need to burn a physical CD. Other applications just check to make sure that a volume with the correct name is mounted. In that case a mounted .toast, .iso or .img will work just fine.
