I need help

I downloaded the Age of Empires, thinking it'd be easy. Wasn't
I did learn several things: I need a mixed mode CD, one for data and the other for Audio.
thing is the audio thing is called
Age of Empires Audio.Sd2f
and it opens in quicktime player, so I really don't know how to get the files out of it.

Ill be burning this to a blank CD-R for use in OS9 (assuming its the right kind of CD lol)
also if someone has disk utility for tiger it'd be nice if you could upload it; mine mysteriously disappeared (and I think its because os9 was doing a repair on its own :/)
rnning os tiger
and os 9 for games themselves

Centurion, you're going to need Toast, at least v5, to burn a mixed-mode CD for Age of Empires.

The .Sd2f is a Sound Designer 2 file (s d 2 f), but Toast will pick this up and know what to put on the Audio partition on the disc you burn. A version of Toast after v5 is fine, but the instructions on the AoE page.

We did have a lengthy discussion about this at http://macintoshgarden.org/forum/preserving-the-audio-partition-of-a-cd , there were several proposed solutions, depending on the version of Toast you use. You can of course just play the game without the awesome audio.
In the end, the audio on the .sd2f image is just a collection of AIFF files, and as I said many times, these can be jostled around before burning to the audio portion of the disc - I'm presuming that it is some library from the Mac OS Audio CD Player that plays the Audio from the CD while the game is playing - ie. so the Audio part is actually audio CD format, it's just when we ripped it, we saved the audio tracks as AIFF.

How do you get to that error ?

Have you installed Toast, or just run it from the install image ?

Looks like he was attempting it on a wrong drive - attempting to install to a "go-between" drive between OS X & SheepShaver? I dunno, more info is required.

System Specs
Startup Disk
USING OSX Tiger

I also have os9. was not planning on using any emulators, because i already have several systems running OS9.
I double click the toast to mount the installer, double click the installer, tell it to install to MacHD and then it gives me that error.
My intentions were to
Open Sit
Sees Toast: Mount Toast
Use it and unarchive the .Sd2f file, then make a mixed mode CD for Age of Empires. I would, from there, make several copies of the disk, startup in os9, and play Age of Empires. It was Foolproof.

USING OSX Tiger ... I also have os9.

Probably attempting installing the file under OS X and not 9. Your screenshot indicates this is so.

Can't understanbd your error.
1. Boot into Mac OS 9
2. Lock and mount Toast image
3. Drag and drop Toast executable onto OS9 drive
4. Run from the hard disk to configure.
5. Job done.

miketomtom is right.
It works in OS9. However I've run into a problem with the instructions ive been using
in the following quote below, I followed instructions, but when it came time for step 10, there was NO PROMPT for mixedmode CD. Roxio went on and only copied the Audio part to the CD. when i clicked record (i was expecting both the audio and the data...)
On a side note, Age Of Empires.toast can be mounted, but the resulting disk image is NOT recognized by the Age of Empires game as having a disk in. Anyone know what AOE checks for when it runs?

This definitely worked in Toast v5, and I kept detailed notes for doing it to copy my Age of Empires cd.
Notes here:

1. Open Toast
2. Click and hold "Other", select "Disc Image"
3. Mount the "Age of Empires Data.toast" image
4. Select Data CD - Mac OS (not extended)
5. Drag the mounted "Age of Empires" volume to the Toast Window
6. Select Audio
7. Drag the "Age of Empires Audio.toast" image to the Toast Window
8. Insert your blank CD
9. Hold OPTION key and click Record.
10. It will prompt advising whether to create a "mixed mode CD (not advised)"
11. Click "Yes"
12. Install from your burned CD.
13. Download and Install any updates from Macsoft.
14. Enjoy AoE with the music.

I'll try a few more times in Toast v7 ....

Can someone else who's followed these instructions confirm that it worked (or didn't). I remember that if you didn't hold down OPTION while clicking on the record button you did just get the Audio partition - or whaever was showing in the window at the time.
I know it worked for me, I burned about 6 copies of AoE like this.

Can you confirm the version of Toast v5 you are using ?
I used v5.0.2, anything later conflicted with the iApps burning, ie. iTunes and the Finder Disc Burning software.
I can always fire up the MDD in OS9 and try this again tomorrow.
