Trouble installing MS Excel 4.0 from here

Hello All,

i am trying to rebuild a vintage Mac for my father-in-law and while I have a copy of excel 4.0 on the floppy and I can't read the floppies.

So then I came here and found what I was hoping is the Download that would work here:

http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/microsoft-office-3

Installing Word worked great!

When I tried Excel i get this...It created a folder Excel 4.0 E 1992. In that folder is another folder titled "00-065-0400-46250964" which is empty.

Any thoughts or any other Downloads of binaries that people know of.

Oh Ya... Also looking for Address Book Pro v2 if anyone has that installer lying around.

Cheers

The archive containing the folder "Excel 4.0 E 1992" I've just tested is OK. However, it crashed the Mac for some unknown reason when trying to extract the archive using StuffIt Expander 5.5, so I used StuffIt Lite 3.6 for a successful extraction (it mentions that 3.6 was used for archiving on the MsO-3 page).

It should extract to the folder named "Excel 4.0 E 1992" as you said, but inside are 7 floppy disk image files + an empty folder labled "00-065-0400-46250964", this empty folder's name is just a holder for the serial number (if required).

The 7 floppy disk image files: 6 of are in Disk Copy 4.2 Read Only image format. Plus 1 Disk Copy 6.1.2 (or newer) Read/Write floppy image file.

The Read/Write image file (Install disk 1) is included because the installer program will want to write user personalization to the 1st floppy (image) during installation.

Disk Copy 6.1.2 or newer (usually 6.3) can also mount Disk Copy 4.2 image files. All 7 install disks should be dragged onto Disk Copy 6.x's icon to mount all at the same time onto a desktop, then run the installer.

Don't know why you don't see anything but the serial number in your copy. You haven't said what you used to extract the archive and what Mac or OS you're wanting to install this on.

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the advice, it worked, got it installed and up and running.

Then when clicking on the top Navigation Bar I get the following error:

The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 1 occurred.

Mac G4, OS 9.2

This would be why for an old Excel from 1992. You would need to use a newer version of Excel or Ms Office to run OK under 9.2, I think.

You could try increasing its memory settings before trying to run it, but my guess is that an Excel this old would suit older hardware and Mac OS (or under emulation of older hardware).
