Using Abandonware on a Real Mac?

Hey everyone! I've a question for you. Is it possible to use downloaded software from this site, place it on a CD or floppy disk, and run it on a Macintosh Performa 6300CD? I own one and I'd like to use it once again. I think I've attempted to transfer After Dark modules from the internet to my Mac, but it didn't work. Anyway, all replies will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, this should be fine.

Many of us use old macs to play the games on here - I have a PM5300 which used to get software via CD, then I changed to a PBG3, much more portable.

If you can download and burn on a more recent Mac, but make sure you burn an HFS-format CD, not HFS+. Burning on a recent Windows PC may allow you to burn HFS format, otherwise you'll need to download some extensions to the Performa 6300 to mount and use Windows CDs.
The exact extensions will depend on the OS you are using on the PM6300.

Don't let the experience of After Dark put you off trying. After Dark worked fine in OS 7, and then the special version here was for OS9. There was a dead-zone of OS8 in the middle.

Are you downloading them on a Mac or a PC?

AD 4.04 (with or without the resources decompressed) should work fine in all versions of OS 8. (Versions before 4.03 were incompatible with OS 8.)

@bertyboy - THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
@Euryale - Gracias por la punta!
@Daxeria - Downloading from a Mac (not my performa) and placing on my performa. I think my OS for my performa is 7.5. It's been so long since I've been on it though. I definitely don't remember the after dark version.

Whoops, just ran into a problem. I tried burning a CD in HFS mode on my Windows XP laptop using MagicISO, but when I put the disk into my Performa, it asks me if I want to initialize the CD, which is impossible and I know that that means that it can't read it. I tried finding a way to burn in HFS format on my Mac OS X (10.8.5) without downgrading or using Toast, but I found nothing. Please help!

You can use HFVExplorer to create a HFS image in Windows. Copy in any files you want and then burn a CD from the image with ImgBurn or any similar burning program.

You might have to change the file extension to .iso to please some programs, but most should allow you to load any filetype.

If you put the burned CD into your new Mac, and perform Get Info on the mounted CD, how is it described ? ie. Format: HFS Standard.

Sorry I already shredded that disk lol. But I did burn another disk that's straight off a .toast file (Lawnmower Man, retrieved from here) using Disk Utility. When I check the format, it says it's Mac OS Standard. When I put it into my Performa, It works! Maybe I should use that HFVExplorer Protocol 7 was talking about...

Chances are MagicISO created a HFS+ (aka Extended) filesystem. You need Mac OS 8.1 or higher to read those.

IIRC, HFVExplorer only creates HFS Standard images so you should be fine with that.

I am 100% sure I burned it in HFS mode. Anyway, I tried using HFVExplorer, but it only created a .dsk file (I am trying to burn the files to a CD, not a floppy if you didn't know). I'm new to the whole HFVExplorer thing, so any verbal or visual advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah HFVExplorer is designed to make/edit hard disk images for Mac emulators.

But these are still just a regular HFS volume (like a Mac CDROM) so burning it to CD as a disk image still works. Plus it should set the correct type/creator codes for recognised filetypes.

Sorry, forgot about that. I'll try it out later and post the outcome.

We're getting closer, but not close enough. I did everything correctly, but I still can't get it to work. Here, let me explain what I did:
1. Open HFVExplorer.
2. Create a new blank .dsk file.
3. Copy all wanted files to the .dsk file.
4. Close HFVExplorer.
5. Change the .dsk file's extension (.dsk) to .iso.
6. Open ImgBurn.
7. Choose burn image to disk option.
8. Burn the disk.
9. Eject it and place it in my Performa.

It reads it fine, except I can't open the files. It just gives me a message saying how the program that created it could not be found, even though I was trying to open an application. Any ideas?

If you unpack archives in Windows the files contained are going to lose their resource forks. This makes then unusable in Mac OS. Particularly apps.

Copy the archives to the disk image instead. Then unpack them on the Performa.

You mean copy the .sit files to the disk image? And another thing, will my Performa read/open .dsk files? I wanted to get The Backyard, but I only found floppy disk copies (.dsk files). Do I unpack these before putting them on the .dsk file (the drive), or do I just copy the .dsk image (The Backyard disks) to it and unpack it on my Performa?

Yeah put the sit files in the disk image.

I think the .dsk files you found are aimed at emulators. They might open in Disk Copy 4.2 but they probably don't have any type/creator set. If they're 1.4MB you can write then in XP with Rawrite. If they're 800K you'll have to try writing them on the Performa with Disk Copy.

You can probably put them unpacked onto the .dsk image you're burning. You could always put in the archive as well.

Most of this stuff is talked about at length somewhere else here I'm sure.

Okay, thanks. I'm gathering up all my data for burning the CD. Once it's all collected, I'll let you know the results.

Wait, what about .img files? They aren't Disk Images (copy of a CD), they must be a different kind (floppy?)

.img can be anything. The only way to know if it's a floppy or a CD is the file size. If it's a CD you can just burn it with Toast, ImgBurn etc. If it's a floppy then Disk Copy 4.2 will probably open it.

CDs are usually just a straight copy so can be burned or opened with anything. In certain cases it might be made with Shrinkwrap (whch is compressed). But in that case it should be written that it was made with that.

will my Performa read/open .dsk files?

It will if you can get this utility installed on it.

@Protocol 7: Yeah, I don't think 1.5 megabytes is a CD lol.

Once again, I'm stuck in another rut. HFVExplorer won't let me copy .dsk files to my virtual drive, and I can't open .sit files on my Performa. It says .sit at the end, and I have StuffIt Expander, but it won't recognize them. When I do get info on my Performa, it says "document" as the file type. Any ideas?

Wild guess - there is no Desktop database.

Either copy the .sit files to your Performa hard disk and rebuild the desktop database (Hoping someone will remember the keys, or use google). Or,

Drag the .sit file onto the Stuffit Expander icon.

I did drag and drop the .sit file onto StuffIt Expander, which did nothing, but I don't know what you mean by "rebuild the desktop database"

"rebuild the desktop database"

When booting up, press the Shift key until the Mac OS asks you whether you want to do this.

It's the database of document types and its depending applications, which enables you to double-click documents to open it with the proper application.

Shift? It was command-option at startup, shift only disables extensions

This is a long shot, but I had a similar discussion recently.
What about setting up another "Mac" on the PC? BasiliskII Build 142 is very good in doing such job.
Might be easier to move files to and fro between BII and Performa 6300.

A FTP connection should be possible too. Not sure about AppleTalk right now.

Ya, but I want to use my old Mac. It's just got that certain feel when using it...

Sure, go ahead.
I was merely thinking of a helper Mac emulator to sort things out and ease transfer.
I had quite a few Macs and a Windows box as AppleTalk server. Smile

Well, I did what macjames said, but it still wouldn't open. I double clicked the file, dragged it onto the StuffIt expander app, but it still does what it did before. What can I possibly do next?

What version of stuffit expander are you using? Your compressed file could be in a newer format, not recognized by your version.

StuffIt Expander 5.5 would be much better. Many files here are compressed in StuffIt 5 format.

I have to hand it to you guys... this is the reason I love this site. Patient, considered help -- with multiple options and possibilities. I must also suggest Stuffit Expander 5.5 as well.

Also, you could disable any copies of Mac Easy Open, or Easy Open, or Claris XTend or other supposedly "helpful" PC filetype utilities. They can be a real pain (in Control Panels & Extensions) or simply the System Folder if your OS is too old.

The only problem with getting StuffIt expander 5.5, HOW CAN I GET IT!?! If I can't get programs to work, then how am I gonna get this on my performa?

@SuperMew98: Does your PC have a floppy disk drive?

If so, there was another person with a similar problem to you. I created for him a zipped .HFV file containing the Stuffit Expander 5.5 installer program. All that was required was to DL & follow the instructions given here, using the HFVExplorer to write the .HFV to floppy, resulting in a Mac HFS floppy disk containing the installer ready to go.

Failing having a floppy drive in your PC, there's more than one way to get this .HFV to work for you, but see how this goes 1st.

Well it seems you have been able to transfer files to your performa, i can compress the stuffit expander 5.5 in the old format that your expander can decompress, and then you can continue working after that.

@MikeTomTom: Yeah, my PC has a floppy drive, but the one that has one is packed away. I'll try to find it, but can you still tell me the second option.

@SuperMew98: Yes, download that prepared zipped .HFV containing the Stuffit Expander 5.5 installer from the Rapidshare link via my previous post.

Unzip it. Once expanded the .HFV is double-clickable, it auto-mounts in HFVExplorer, so you'll see the contents of this .HFV when you double-click its icon. You'll also see the name of this mounted volume at the top of the list of mounted drives in the left column of HFVExplorer's window, as "Stuffit-55".

Next, open in HFVExplorer, that .dsk you created earlier to burn to CD (you can rename it back from .iso to .dsk) if you still have it. - If you don't have it anymore, create a new drive file via HFVExplorer which you'll later burn to CD.

If you do create a new drive, use ".hfv" as the suffix name ending instead of ".dsk", as these are native (double-clickable) by default in HFVExplorer and they get a nice red apple icon. There's probably no difference between .dsk & .hfv here, as, if you later rename them .iso, they're usually burnable to CD/DVD too, as is.

Anyway, with the disk image to burn to CD also mounted in HFVExplorer, click the "Stuffit-55" disk name listed in HFVExplorer's left-hand column, to bring its content window to the right-hand panel. Drag the file "Aladdin Expander™ 5.5 Install" in the right-hand panel over onto the name of the mounted image to be burned to CD in the left panel of the HFVExplorer window.

When done, click the name of the disk to be burned to CD to view its contents, if you see that "Aladdin Expander™ 5.5 Install" has copied over and looks to be OK (you can see the installer's icon OK) then you should be good to burn it to CD.

You should be able to quit HFVExplorer now, rename the disk image file as .iso and burn it to CD. The "Aladdin Expander™ 5.5 Install" file should be OK to install directly from the CD once mounted in your Mac at this point.

[Edit] Stop The Press! If your Mac's CD reader can read RW media, then disregard all of the above. Well, the above info is OK and will work but it is long-winded.

Simply DL the afore mentioned .HFV, unzip it and rename the .HFV to .ISO (ignore warnings of possible incompatibility) then burn it to CD using imgburn or similar. You can use ordinary CD media if you have to, of course, but a 1.4MB file seems a little wasteful to me. Wink

Very simple, no in-between juggling, and it works Smile

Just tested this out for myself, .HFV floppy disk images are .ISO compatible (I'm on a learning curve, too).
