For me, both downloads work fine (original and mirror).
This is on a PowerBook G4/Mac OS X 10.4.11/Mini vMac 3.1.3
Other configurations may vary, though.
This works just fine for me.
A limitation in vMac prevents the game from actually being playable, but the software image appears to be fine.
Okay I retested (Basilisk II) today after re-downloading from the mirror link.
The game launches but immediately halts with this error "This scenario is either damaged or write-protected".
The game disk image unstuffs as locked. To unlock; mark the image, choose 'Info* (commando + I), uncheck box 'Locked' and close window. Mount disk image again and run game.
Help! I'm playing Wizardry 1 on a Mac Plus emulation running on my Powerbook under Mini vMac. Having not played this in about 25 years, I forgot one very important thing: to back up my characters. I was slaughtered near the Monster Control Center on Level 4. Is there any way of getting my party back and resurrected short of making a new party from scratch, leveling them up, and going in to drag my original party out?
Back when I was playing on my old Apple II+, there used to be a character editor that you could use to recover and tweak characters. Is there anything out there for the Mac Plus version? Alternatively, I once used a sector editor on the Apple II+ version. I could try that as well, but would need pretty detailed instructions... it's been a long time since I messed with this sort of stuff.
Does anyone have suggestions, or web sites where I might find out more info? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Better to ask the question on the game's own page: http://macintoshgarden.org/games/wizardry
I can't answer for you as I haven't the patience to play these old RPG's, much less to try and figure out how the heck the previous owner managed to botch their master disk, as seems to be the case with my own copy. But I do have the first Wizardry game and will be uploading a new archive shortly, with full documentation. Everyone will certainly be welcome to experiment with it.
Thanks, I just gave up and started over. My new characters are much better than the ones I lost anyway.
I thought I was doing OK for the posting topic, since this one was entitled "Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord".
It's always okay to post in the forums but if there's useful information uncovered in the discussion, then it will always be easy to find it again if it was posted in the comment section of that particular game. Anyway that's what I try to do.
Maybe you can help me with Wizardry actually...how do you start over? Can it be done with either of the disk images I just uploaded to the Wizardry I page? It seems like it only wants to continue with the previous owner's campaign and requires a password.
