FTP server Daemon for mac os 9 RAID backup server?

hey my mac friends!

i have a raid adapter by ACARD..
its a 6890M and it allows met to run 2 sata drives in RAID1 or RAID0
under mac os 9.

Id like to be able to connect to the files from other powerpc macs obviously using fetch 4
because fetch rules;) but...

what software can i use for the actual ftp server?
im having trouble finding which server
actually im having trouble finding ANY ftp server
that has ever run on mac os 9.22

was there no ftp servers? surely there was?

i need an answer asap as i have things to set in motion and a strict timeline of about 2 weeks to accomplish..

I'm not really sure (as the disks are somewhere else at the moment) but didn't the installer disk of the classic systems contain a FTP server software? At least from OS 8 and on? IIRC…

I used the server in NCSA Telnet. But eventually switched to AppleShare.

NetPresenz should do what you want. It even has web and gopher servers as well

Works very well for me and gets great speeds.

I used to use this "Hotline FTP Server" (made by the same folks that created the Hotline file sharing server/client software).

It was a really basic FTP server and ultra simple to set up and use.

But if this is for a LAN, why not use AppleTalk over TCP/IP instead?

I actually found Netpresenz very shortly after making this post.. and am so far leaning towards that considering i saw many posts about it on the net.. japanese.. french.. u name it.. people love it apparently.. (loved? hehe) ummmmm... yea.. so its news to read that hotline has an ftp only app? because yes.. i do want this for internal network.. to be able to move files via FTP protocol. i use Filezilla on windows 7 + OSX and i use fetch on os9....

at the moment i just made a raid server using an old Pentium III 700mhz box i was given.. threw xp on it.. and am going to use software raid to raid the drives but.. i would like to have storage inside a mac aswell... using PCI Sata adapters to create Raid1 Mirrors for safe backup. A friend reccommended i dont go above 500GB hard drives but id lke to go for a 750gb or 1TB drive size (in raid1 mirror dual config) will bad things happen if i attempt to go over 500gb in os9?

its not my only raid server i have 2 others + a NAS for media/movies but never can have too much safe RAID mirrored storage!!!!!

If your Mac supports hard disks over 128GB (in one partition), then it should support up to Exabytes or more. The exact figure is ridiculous. See here -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2422 and here -> http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21924?viewlocale=en_US

PS. Looks like if you are using MacOS 9 or Mac OS X, you can have at least up to 2TB for a volume/file.

PPS. nearly 8 Exabytes under OSX 10.5.3 or above - 8 MILLION TERABYTES!!!

Yeah there is no reason you can't raid big drives, your pci adapters are probably sil3112 based and those should be good for up to 2TB drives

Also i have to say this whenever the words "safe" or "backup" are used in the same sentence as "raid" - Raid is not a backup, if you want your data to be safe keep a independent backup

I thought RAID1 was a disk-2 rebuild disk with enough data to rebuild disk-1?

RAID-0 is the iffy one.

max: raid introduces fault tolerance.. thats alot safer then no fault tolerance.

raid1 is just mirroring.. same data created simultaneously on two drives at the same time...
if one drive fails the other is still good and u have time to shut down and buy a new drive and replace
and the raid will resync + recreate teh 2nd copy from the first..

raid5 is the one that uses parity data on 3 or more drives to rebuild missing data if one fails..
its the most risky type of raid if you ask me, and requires the most overhead/resources/cpu

raid10 is what i use on my amd / intel machines... which is a combination of striping + mirroring using 4 drives.. basically, its a striped pair, doubled/mirroed... so u get teh speed of more then one drive, with the safety of up to two drives can fail.. and the data is ok... depending on which 2 fail that is.. if member 1 from first pair + member 1 from 2nd pair both die at the same time then you are screwed.. but member 1 from 1st pair, + member 2 from 2nd pair can both fail and the raid is still accessible...

anyways.. i agree with your comments about backup nonetheless..
my idea of safe backup.. is having my data on more then one raid array on more then one machine!

Yeah i agree that raid is much safer than just a single disk, and haveing your data on multiple raids should make it pretty damn safe

Just i cringe when i see people thinking raid is akin to a backup becuse say a program goes nuts and writes data all over your raid set - you loose everything

agree totally.. this will be my 3rd 4 disk raid array.
well.. i have 3 x 4 x hdd raid arrays..
tis will be the 4th actually.. x2 instead of 4 because i dont have a firmtek 1v4 card which is the only card for os9 that will work with 4 ports? isnt it?
id love to have a 4 port card for a raid10 or raid5 but under os 9 i dont think thats gonna happen;) with softraid 2.2.2 i think is the only way to do it right?

does anyone have an email for protocol7.. i want to ask him about attempting to reduce that firmtek firmware we gotta figure this out... if the seritek firmware has both osx + os9 boot drivers theres gotta be a way to remove the osx boot drivers or vice versa to end up with one or the other functional firmware for os9 or functional firmware for osx.. hvaing to reflash between the two modes is alot easier then having to resolder chips on every card.. its either we figure this out or i havet o learn how to solder

on our forums macos9lives.com there was reference made by a guy named mactron saying he used softraid 2.2.2 is that the same as the conley softraid that is linked here?
has anyone got experience with this software running under mac os 9?
i mean, is it the same conley = softraid 2.2.2? any of u used it?
