Uploading Mac OS 9 to Macintosh Garden

Hi all,

Sorry if this is a repost, but couldn't find any discussion of this in the forums. Is Mac OS 9 now considered abandonware? If so - or even if not - are images of the Macintosh System Software or Mac OS ROM files (pre OS X) allowed to be uploaded and hosted on Macintosh Garden? What has historical precendent been for this, and has Apple objected?

I have a copy of Mac OS 9.2.2 which is "universal" and works with the PowerMac G4 MDD to allow FireWire 400 models to boot into OS 9. This is from the original Apple Software Restore CDs. I am frequently contacted for copies of this software after writing about this on several blogs, and would like to post a copy online for public access.

Always welcome, but please don't post it as "universal" - we've had many different sets of discs for OS9.2.2 from many different sources that some have tried to call universal, but they can't boot some Macs after the MDD, ie. eMacs, iBooks, etc.

So the upload would be greatly appreciated, but call it what it is
If it's the generic OS9.2.2 System Folder to be used as the Classic folder, call it that.
If it's the OS9_General.dmg from Install and Restore discs for PowerMac G4 MDD FW400 call it that.
If it's the OS9 disc from an iMacG4, call it that.
If it's the OS9 disc or OS9_General.dmg from an eMac or iBook, call it that.
etc, etc.

If you can identify the Mac OS ROM version that comes in the OS9 system folder that is installed, and maybe even the Mac OS X version (ie. 10.1.4 or 10.2.0 or 10.2.1 etc) that came on the discs with it, that would help us age the OS9 version exactly.

Having spent the last several days trying to get OS9 running on the MDD G4 I just acquired, I for one would be very grateful if you would post this.

No downloads left on there Bertyboy.

I still have my retail 9.2.? (which was with an MDD, and definitely installed on MDD). As a matter of fact, I have not come across a single G3/G4 that this hasn't worked on. It even worked on a 1.25GHz USB 2.0 eMac.

My disk won't image, but if someone here can make a bootable CD out of my Software Installs folder, then you will have an OS9 install CD. I cannot remember the size of the .sit file off hand, but it is probably about 60-100MB tops. I will happily upload this if someone here can help make it bootable.

I just read all this again, and it sounds so lame... I guess if you wanted to do an OS 8.6+ upgrade, you could use the folder off a mounted disk image or something....

still sounds lame. I'll shutup now.

OK, I have the OS9General.dmg file ready to go but can't seem to get the file uploaded and the page created. I'm using Safari 5 and Firefox 10, neither browser does anything which I click "Save" or "Preview" I was able to start the upload of the file itself via the "Upload" button but it never finishes, just stalls out. What's the best browser and version to use? Are these known issues?

Use an external upload site (mediafire?), as this site is the RAKE when it comes to file storage.

So after a few tries I managed to get the .dmg file uploaded, after which the page would finally save. However the file is now posted with a message "Temporarily unavailable due to high bandwidth costs"

Anyone know how temporary this might be?

How long is a piece of string? Read the last paragraph of this post made earlier today on the subject of large file sizes uploaded to the Garden.

I've created a new Dropbox account and uploaded the OS9General.dmg file to the Public folder, this is now linked from the Macintosh Garden page. If anybody would like to download and mirror this file at other hosting sites for redundancy in case of any issues, please post the link and I'll add the info to the page.

im trying to burn this os9general.dmg right now but my toast 9 is saying that it is a 1.76GB HFS+ CD-ROM.... either my toast is screwing up or someone didnt create this image properly.. Ive got a brand new cd in my drive. it shouldnt be showing up at a 1.76gb HFS "cd" .. how is it a 1.76gb DVD when the dmg file is 352mb... this is annoying... Is this a cd image or a dvd image?

OS9General.dmg is installed while booted into OSX: You should not burn any CD.
1. Boot inyo OSX.
2. Make sure the gard disk you want to install OS9 onto has OS9 drivers installed. This is the default for drives formatted under OSX 10.4 and earlier. OSX 10.5 and later defaulted to NOT installing OS9 drivers.
3. Lock and mount OS9General.dmg
4. Drag the complete contents of the mounted disk image to the drive you want OS9 to boot from.
5. Open the Startup Disk control panel, OS9 should show as an option, if your Mac can boot OS9.
