This is the page that merged all applications pages assosiated with Mac OS 9.x and cleaned up all discussions for the original application page. This page is just like a guide. Plus, it also resizing CD scans.
Mac OS 9 is the final major release of Apple's Mac OS before the launch of OS X. Introduced on October 23, 1999, Apple positioned it as "The Best Internet Operating System Ever," highlighting Sherlock 2's Internet search capabilities, integration with Apple's free online services known as iTools and improved Open Transport networking. While Mac OS 9 lacks protected memory and full pre-emptive multitasking, lasting improvements include the introduction of an automated Software Update engine and support for multiple users.
Apple discontinued development of Mac OS 9 in 2002, transitioning all future development to Mac OS X. Since that time, no updates have been released. The final updates to Mac OS 9 addressed compatibility issues with OS X while running in the Classic Environment and compatibility with Carbon applications. At the 2002 World Wide Developers Conference, Steve Jobs began his keynote address by staging a mock funeral for OS 9. However, there are still users of Mac OS 9 today. Specifically retro-gamers, people using old software that was discontinued before the introduction of OS X or users of old hardware incompatible with Mac OS X. (PowerPC Macs made before the introduction of the G3 processor.)
Apple billed Mac OS 9 as including "50 New Features" and heavily marketed its Sherlock 2 software, which introduced a 'channels' feature for searching different online resources and introduced a QuickTime-like metallic appearance. Mac OS 9 also featured integrated support for Apple’s suite of Internet services known as iTools (later re-branded as .Mac, then MobileMe, which is now known as iCloud) and included improved TCP/IP functionality with Open Transport 2.5.
Other features new to Mac OS 9 include:
Integrated support for multiple user accounts without using At Ease. Support for voice login through VoicePrint passwords. Keychain, a feature allowing users to save passwords and textual data encrypted in protected keychains. A Software Update control panel for automatic download and installation of Apple system software updates. A redesigned Sound control panel and support for USB audio. Speakable Items 2.0, also known as PlainTalk, featuring improved speech synthesis and recognition along with AppleScript integration. Improved font management through FontSync. Remote Access Personal Server 3.5, including support for TCP/IP clients over Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). An updated version of AppleScript with support for TCP/IP. Personal File Sharing over TCP/IP. USB Printer Sharing, a control panel allowing certain USB printers to be shared across a TCP/IP network. 128-bit file encryption in the Finder. Support for files larger than 2 GB. Unix volume support. CD Burning in the Finder (introduced in Mac OS 9.1). Addition of a 'Window' menu to the Finder (introduced in Mac OS 9.1) -Wikipedia
Mac OS 9.2.1 is the update for Mac OS 9.1 or 9.2 users. This is the update that will not work for non-G3 Macintoshes. It updates the Classic Environment in Mac OS X and updates most enhancements.
There's also the Mac OS 9.2.1 Updater CD. It includes the Mac OS 9.2.1 update images in various languages and it was came from the Mac OS X Upgrade Kit. However, I have lost the CD image.
Mac OS 9.2.2 is the update for Mac OS 9.2.1 users. It updates the Classic Environment application compatibility in Mac OS X and updates most enhancements.

Restoring a MDD to Mac OS 9 requires these CDs to get the Mac OS ROM version required to boot a MDD in Mac OS 9.
Where are the download links?
Megaupload has been closed because of U.S. federation, so if you want MDD discs look for it in Max1zzz's server or other servers with the discs.

This is MacOS 9.2.2, release in December 2001. MacOS 9.2.2 is the last version of MacOS based on the original Macintosh operating system. Please note: this isn't a install CD. This is custom bootable CD with fully working MacOS 9.2.2.
This disk contain two folders: 1) Applications (some original apps and Toast 5) 2) System Folder (system folder) To install, drag and drop System Folder to hard disk. There should be Apple OS9 driver installed while partitioning the hard disk. This disk is made specially for eMac G4 800 Mhz (Ati Graphics version) and 100% compatible. This model of eMac won't boot this CD if you change internal CD-ROM to custom DVD-ROM.
This image is a customized version of Mac OS 9.2.2 built for the last generation of Titanium PowerBook G4s, originally hosted here. It will most likely work with any Mac made between 2001 and 2003 that is compatible with OS 9, but may be missing hardware-specific drivers for other systems. To make a bootable copy, you need either Toast under Mac OS 9 (included on disk) or the Mac OS X bless command.
This is a copy of Mac OS 9.2.2 for the PowerMac G4 MDD, by oakbog. It will only boots for PowerMac G4 MDD (FireWire 400 models only); should also work for other Mac OS 9 compatible G3 or G4 Mac models. Usable as Classic Mode for all PowerPC Macs running Mac OS X. The linked file is an OS X disk image named "OS9General.dmg", which was contained on the Software Restore CDs bundled with these systems. It includes "Applications (Mac OS 9)" and "System Folder". Unlike retail Mac OS 9 installers, this software is able to boot the PowerMac G4 MDD (FireWire 400 models) into OS 9 or can be used as Classic Mode on any PowerMac running Mac OS X v10.1-10.4. This System includes the "Mac OS ROM" file v9.6.1.
Download via Macintosh Garden: Mac OS 9.2.2 for PowerMac G4 MDD
To use this software to boot an MDD in OS 9, use Disk Utility in Mac OS X (10.1-10.4) to format a hard drive in Mac OS Extended format, and be sure to choose the option to include "Mac OS 9 Drivers". Once formatted mount the .dmg file and copy the System and Applications folders from the disk image to the hard drive. Restart your MDD via the Startup System Pref Pane or with the Option key held down, and select your Mac OS 9 drive as the Startup Disk.
For more info see The Vintage Mac Museum Blog: Reinstalling Mac OS 9 on a PowerMac G4 MDD
Compatibility9.0 runs fine on Sheepshaver (and can be updated to 9.0.4) but 9.1, 9.2.1, and 9.2.2 won't. For G4 AGP install, it has the special build of Mac OS specifically designed for the G4 AGP Graphics and will not boot in other G4 models.

Hi everyone, about a year i bought an imac summer 2001 like my profile photo, and i need if someone has the Mac OS 9.2.1-E (Spanish Version) can upload it . i would greatly appreciate it , I got the Mac OS 9.1-E but it isnt boot as well , floppy disk appears on screen, thank you.
Two eMac CDs are here along with many Universal disks.

As stated above, all of the links for the Machine-Specific Installers are down for the time being, but several of the links under the Custom Variants section are broken.
The two RAR segments of the System Folder Only go to a download site which says they are 48mb and 33mb and even gives a direct link on mirrorcreator.com. But the files when downloaded are less than 1mb dmg files which when opened contain an OSX rar app that says it will only run on OSX 10.9.
The Bootable Image for eMac G4 (the 800Mhz ATI Graphics custom CD) is redirected to a site that asks you to signup with a credit card.
These links should be removed and the files (if anyone has them or knows where else to get them) placed in a new location.
i see the imac g4 restore cds from 2002 are posted here... but does anyone have the imac g4 restore cds from 2003?? these cds came with mac os x 10.2.3.. id like to find out which mac os rom version is on these cds (for the purposes of furthering a hack to try to get mac os 9 running on these 2003 imac g4s - https://68kmla.org/forums/index.php?/topic/21515-os-9-on-ibook-g4-findings/)
for people like myself who like things compact + neat + tidy ive combined all 4 of the mac os 9 updates (9.0->9.0.4, 9.0.4->9.1, 9.1->9.2.1,9.2.1->9.2.2) into one parent containing disk image, macbinary'd.. ive done the identical thing for the "international" Z- updates, two seperate combination compilations if you will, will post links as soon as i doublecheck + test the updates are ok
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=1878.0
9.0.2 install + restore images are posted here for the sawtooth agp.. i believe these cds shipped with the sawtooths released dec 2nd 1999 up untill summer of 2000!
ive compiled a list of all powermac g3/g4 desktops here by release date http://www.oldschooldaw.com/forums/index.php?topic=389.0 so u can see which machines shipped with which version at a glance on one page instead of the way everymac organizes this information..
i appreciate your taking the time to help, i think u have probably read other threads by me by now that this cd is the only way to get a working 8.6 install on a g4 450mhz that includes working firewire + ethernet + sleep functionality.. the way that apple intended the computer to function 100%
as with any computer, running a less resource intensive os results in fast performance..
old operating system + new computer = insane performance
new operating + old computer = very bad performance
os8.6 is zippy as hell on a g4 450mhz.. because the g4 450mhz is *That much faster* then any other mac that was running 8.6.. ie: the 98 beige towers + 9xxx 8xxx 7xxx series were only clocking in at around 200 some odd mhz..
so, rather then running 10.4.11 on a sawtooth with only 450mhz cpu, i plan to run older software from 1996, 1997 + 1998 and get incredible performance from the machine rather then
having it run like a slow ass piece of trash in osx.. i have other machines that can more adequately run os10 + even mac os 9 (like on the quicksilver + mdd) the sawtooth 450mhz is shit even in os9 compaerd to these other later machines as long as its running on its original 450mhz cpu that is. but running 8.6 is something the quicksilvers + mdd's are not able to do, so its the trick up the sawtooth's sleeve.
9.0.4 is not compatible with the sawtooth motherboard at all. 9.0.4 was for gigabit ethernet models only (code name "mystic") which features a different motherboard all together and only 3 ram slots (like the later digital audio + quicksilver models)
the sawtooth is only compatible with 9.0, 9.1, 9.21 + 9.22 (according to my tests) it can be hacked to boot 8.6 with the 2.5.1 mac os rom but theres no point in doing this hack unless u feel like sacrificing pci slots for ethernet + firewire addon cards + losing sleep functionality. (something i cant do as i need all my slots for other hardware)
i have ordered the original 9.0.2 install/restore cds that i suspect are for the sawtooth, i will upload them once i get them and test to ensure working firewire/ethernet -- i still hope someone can lay hands on the G4 8.6 AGP system/restore disc
Why do you want the "original " disks?
In general you are better off deciding what OS you want to run and using the universal installer for that OS. It is less likely to have bugs.
On a G4 for a classic OS you should be running 9.04 - 9.2.2 (9.2.2 recommended)
Disks are here.

If you want to install a flavor of OS X:

And I think the five CD G4 Quicksilver set would probably also work.

i need the original software restore for a sawtooth g4 450mhz
i didnt see it in this list!
>One of the main mistakes people make is that they try to mount an image file and then copy it to CD.
Exactly! Once I followed your advice and just copied the ISO file, the CD became magically bootable.
Thanks!
Gary
I recommend the 9.2.2 eMac CD then.
http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mac-os-install-cd-library
http://macintoshgarden.org/sites/macintoshgarden.org/files/apps/eMac_Ins...
Download the .sit file.
Decompress with Drop Unstuff or similar.
Burn to CD with Toast. No need to mount the image.
Just drag it onto Toast and hit the Burn button.
One of the main mistakes people make is that they try to mount an image file and then copy it to CD.
You can't create a bootable CD that way - all you have is a data CD - no drivers!!!
You have to create a CD that is identical to the image at every block.
The best way is to drop the .toast (.iso, .cdr) file onto Toast and hit the Burn button.
You can also Select "Open Image File", ignore the "Mount" option and Burn to CD.

@Gary: What are you looking for? There is nothing on this page that can't be served by using a universal OS install CD from other Garden pages.
This page is an utter mess. Its what you get when nothing is archived to the internal server. Third party ad driven free storage sites are a con and are the pits to access. They also have a habit of removing the DL's if they're not accessed frequently.
The page description above, isn't helped by the colorful but empty DL "holding places" + inline graphics delivered by 3rd party sites, taking up so much real estate.
This page needs a complete makeover or removal. All of the possible content needs to be archived internally.
How do I actually download ANY of these files? When I click through to ANY link, I am transferred to "minus.com" which tells me that "I can Chat with Anyone Anywhere" and asks me to sign up.
The download button then displays hundreds of photos but NO download ever begins.

It's time to split this page into Mac OS 9 versions. I will start with 9.0.x first.
My personal library is here:
http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/macos-install-cd-library
Re-added version allemand (9.0.4).
Would be nice to see the retail (non-machine-bundled) versions to be uploaded into the internal file slots.
Re-uploaded Power Mac G4 (AGP) Software Install (OS 9.0.4) (CD: Z691-2657-A) and Power Mac G4 (AGP) Software Restore (OS 9.0.4) (CD: Z691-2656-A). These are international versions.
Last time I tried to download the 9.1 update, it wouldnʻt open, even in Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
Hello,
I've been trying to download the Mac OS 9 updates for my iMac G3 (of which I installed using an iBook Install Disc). However, I cannot expand them in Mac OS 9.0.4. I downloaded the latest Stuffit Expander (7.0.3 and 5.5 installed), and disabled mounting the disc images. I even tried Disk Copy, but I get error -39. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
The question is: "Since..."
"Coming soon, for luck." is such a inconvenient "No image uploaded." message.
I have posted an app which contains both the mac os9 and osx install disks for the powermac g4 quicksilver 2002 so can you remove the powermac g4 quicksilver 2002 from this page.

Mac OS D-9.1 has been deleted (MediaFire). Can someone re-upload it?
And why has it been touched?
The problem with Mac OS 9.0 update is language kit. A real installation CD is required for all non-english versions, which is a PITA if you have a german updater from 9.0.4 to 9.1, but it doesn't work. Following https://discussions.apple.com/thread/368213 one could of course uninstall language kit... but then, what is the sense of a language kit in the first place?
Thank you both for your help..
I figured it was easier to make another HD image (Sheepshaver really makes this part easy)
and reinstall a whole new system,
I didn´t want to do this before because I was lazy to reinstall all the programs again,
but it went well and now it works fine,
now the sound manager detects the -built in- sound device and I have sound,
I´ve noticed that OS 9 is much more stable than Basilisk w/8.1 on the Win7 environment
Once again Thanks!
I read somewhere that I can browse the iNTERNET with Sheepshaver
now I´m gonna try that...
The only other thing I can think of is to reinstall OS 9 making sure you use the new world rom. Perhaps something gets left out of the install when it can't detect the onboard audio.
I've rarely used OS 9 in Sheepshaver. Prefer 8.6.
Ok; got some pieces which might be of use:
and
If u still got the '8.1 Install Disk' the 'Sound Control Panel' should be available for sure. HTH.
Graphics/Sound
QuickDraw acceleration (check mark)
Disable sound output (unchecked)
------------------------------
On the OS Sound control panel
says Alert sounds, input, output is blank as if no sound device was detected at all,
on the extension´s manager all the Quicktime extensions are enabled
Hmm, no sound device in the control panel?
Is sound enabled in Sheepshaver? Make sure nosound is set to false in the prefs file.
Thanks for your quik response..
I´m using the oldworld ROM
and now that you mention it, I´ll try again with the NewWorld ROM
... .... .....
.... ... ....
Nope the NewWorld ROM works, still no sound
I checked the sound control panel but it doesn´t show any sound device (blank)
by the way I also Have Basilisk w/8.1 and works fine
The rom you're using with Sheepshaver can cause this. Are you using an old world one (4MB PowerMac)? If so, you'll need to extract the new world one from the iMac update (this will be mentioned in the Sheepshaver tutorials all over).
Failing that, did you select the "built-in" audio for output in the Sound control Panel? Even though it's the only option you still have to click it.
Hello, HELP
after so much trouble trying to get the OS 9 Retail, (I had to get it through other means from another site)
I finaly installed it but I have no sound at all,
so I don´t know what else I should do,
I´m running it through Sheepshaver on Windows 7 Ultimate
and I installed it over OS 8.1 with a clean install but I kept the QuickTime extensions
so I try to reinstall Quicktime from the OS 9 CD but it won´t let me do it cuz the installer had to be some other version...
so any suggestion would be appreciated........ Thanks
(excuse the grammar, English is not my native language)
Hi, well I´m trying to download the 9.0.4 retail bootable version
it sends me to a web page that requires me to download and install the nakido flag (done that)
then it says that it´s Queuing the file and that I have to wait almost 2 hours!!
...to start the download??!
is that right?
WHY SO MUCH TROUBLE TO DOWNLOAD A SINGLE FILE?
I don´t have internet at home and I have to pay by the hour
c´mon can you make this easier...and less troublesome?
I have merged all pages associated with Mac OS 9.x with this one, resizing CD scans, and cleaned up discussions.
Can someone download the restore disks and upload them to rapidshare because Max1zz's server is kind of slow.
I have the disc, but it is damaged... it still boots and installs OS922, but I cannot image the entire thing. I am afraid of posting a non-booting image, as it is fairly worthless. There are other retail OS92 discs elsewhere on here, I'm sure.
Sorry.
- download Wired Client (Macupdate)
- find Trackers in menu
- connect to Galaxy (think restore discs are in Hardware)
alternatively; max has them also (& the system discs); Galaxy has a faster download for guests
Does anyone know where I can get hold of a pair of these disks?
By the way I logged into the max1zzz server and could not see this disk, although I am currently downloading a 9.2.2 disk so we'll see if that boots my G4 MDD!
Hey MacMeister, any chance of a re-up??? 2 days of searching for these disks! Thanks a lot in advance!
Thanks, I do have toast titanium, that should do. I'll start pulling out some of the older stuff and try to upload. I know that I have at least the resto disks for my first gen PowerBook G3, first gen PowerBook G4 and G5 DP2ghz. Also somewhere I have most of the Performa line disks, I can't see anyone upset at me giving away Performa and G3 stuff.
Any link to those elusive MDD files would be much appreciated.
Keith
Keith, give it two weeks and I'm sure that these will be up by then.
It's not hard to help ohters out by preserving these:
Restore discs are always welcome, particularly pre-OSX, but now I think anything pre-Intel. I've been looking for a set for an iMac G4 (USB 2) for some time. Took me many years to find some for my DA G4. If you hadn't gathered, many here haved their saved searches on eBay or similar looking for old Macs.
I think it's just common sense that would determine if any material uploaded would be an issue with Apple. I think if you listed some of them, there would be a lot of requests. I'd certainly be after some install and restore media images, I'm always on the lookout for older Macs and no-one ever seems to keep the original media.
A very fine upload. I am downloading, and backing up these images, in case I find a MDD G4 to purchase (I used MDDs at the last "Mac" place I worked -- they were so incredible at the time).
yeah, the first two eMacs were OS9.2.2 (all the others were OS X only) and they would require something like OSX 10.2.8 for the install, so OSX 10.3 may be good.
I don't think you'll be able to use the MDD Restore CDs, for the reasons you're seeing. Is this what you want ? Or is there something else you want of the Restore CDs ?
