"Wolfenstein 3D is a video game that is generally regarded as having both popularized the first-person shooter genre on the PC and creating the basic archetype that subsequent games of the same genre would be built upon."
"It was created by id Software and published by Apogee Software. Released on May 5, 1992 for MS-DOS, the game was inspired by the 1980s Muse Software computer games Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein. It has been ported to a wide variety of systems.
In Wolfenstein 3D, the protagonist is an American soldier (of Polish descent) named William 'B.J.' Blazkowicz attempting to escape from the Nazi stronghold of Castle Wolfenstein; there are many armed guards, as well as attack dogs. The building has a number of hidden rooms containing various treasures, food supplies, and medical kits, as well as three different guns and ammunition.
Wolfenstein 3D was released as shareware, which allowed it to be copied widely. The shareware release contains one episode, consisting of 10 missions (levels). The commercial release consists of six episodes including the shareware episode and a three episode mission pack called 'The Nocturnal Missions'. Like the shareware episode, each commercial episode contains 10 levels, bringing the game to a total of 60 missions. The game was originally released on the PC and then ported to Macintosh computers, Apple IIGS, Acorn Archimedes, Super NES, Atari Jaguar, Game Boy Advance, iPhone, 3DO, Nintendo Wii, and Steam. The source code of the game was published by id Software on July 21, 1995 under a non-profit EULA, starting the long tradition at id Software of opening the entire source code (but not data) to an old game. Some unofficial ports to different platforms like Linux and add-ons have been developed." --Wikipedia.org

This version is informally referred to as the "commercial" version and has a total of 90 levels.

How to run wolfenstein 3d on basilisk II, thanks.
Plays great on my PowerBook 3400c, especially with the flash card hard drive.
Yep. 'retrograded' the Centris to Mac OS 7.5 (not 7.5.3) and it runs fine now.
@GuyWithGuitars: I have a somewhat similar Mac, a Centris 660av. I'm pretty sure that this game runs on it, but I'm a bit memory fazed, as the C660 is "mothballed" at the mo'. This could be a good excuse for me to boot it back to life tho' so will look into it shortly.
[Edit] Yep, Wolf 3D works fine on my C660av. Its running SSW 7.1 pro and the display is set to 256 colors.
Doesn't seem to like Mac OS 7.5 on my Centris 610. Game doesn't even start. Immediate crash, black screen, locked up Mac, even with extensions disabled.
Edit: Sorry, due to external robots changed 'xxx 7' to 'SSW 7' - IIGS User
No need to unpack, it's a disk image. You'll need Apple's Disk Copy to mount that in the Finder.
hi what program do i use to unpack .dsk if anybody knows please e-mail me my e-mail is fsa_...@hotmail.com
also send me a link to the program please and thank you
The Disk Copy hint should work with Basilisk and SSW 7, too.
Edit: Replaced 'xxx7' with 'SSW 7' - IIGS User
I am having problems running Wolf3d, and I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions.
The emulator is working fine, and the installation of Wolf3d was a breeze. The initial screens look and sound perfect: mac play, id software, wolfenstein, level select, and difficulty select are just as they should be.
However, all the levels are messed up. I can see through walls, colors mesh together, I can see enemies behind walls. The actual enemies, the weapons, the bottom bar, and items look just fine. The music and other sounds are perfect, but the maps themselves are all screwed up.
Maybe I missed something in the install. I followed this advice when installing, except I made the .img within Basilisk ii settings:
"Inside of SheepShaver, rename the extension to .img (means Disk Copy).
Or try to add the .dsk file to the SheepShaver's drives list (like you've added the SheepShaver boot disk)."
I really appreciate any help! BTW I'm running Mac 7 within Basilisk ii.
My suggestions: Inside of SheepShaver, rename the extension to .img (means Disk Copy).
Or try to add the .dsk file to the SheepShaver's drives list (like you've added the SheepShaver boot disk).
I had to use Sheepshaver to play this, so how do I mount the .dsk files? I'm using either OS 9.0.4 or 9.1.2.
Another soundtrack added. They just sound great (:
I've uploaded a new archive featuring the two disk images originally uploaded (but now in DiskDup+ format) and a whole bunch of extras.
"WARNING! This is one of the versions that doesn't have any Nazi in it. Sadly the PC version had Nazi."
I think someone was mistaken. I've played both versions uploaded here through their first levels and there are big swastikas and portraits of Hitler and everything. The Super Nintendo version is probably the only censored version. The difference between the two Mac versions here are in the number of levels included, and I *think* the one originally uploaded actually has the most levels.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfenstein_3D
"The Super NES version of the game is notable for being heavily censored and edited, due to the Nintendo of America's censorship policy at the time. Due to this, most of the blood in the game was replaced with sweat (save for B.J.'s face becoming progressively bloodier as health dropped), and Nazi references were removed. Adolf Hitler, who was a character in the game, had his moustache removed and was renamed 'Staatmeister' and the dogs were replaced by giant rats. Additionally, in Germany, the blood was turned green."
Another interesting note:
"The Mac port and all derivative versions are the only ones to use authentic German voices and speech, recorded by native Germans. The other versions contain broken German phrases, with incorrect article and adjective usages, mostly stemming from the misunderstanding of the genders of the nouns."
Due to popular demand and a return favour to the Mac Garden:

This is a direct copy off my legit CD-ROM version. It's the 2nd Encounter non-edited version (i.e. no 'offensive' elements have been removed from the game. There are portraits of the führer and swastika flags on the walls. There is no blood lockout either). To tell you the truth, I didn't actually know a censored version of this game existed until I saw it mentioned in here.
I remember it had exactly the same box as the one pictured above and came with a whole heap of MacPlay game demos on the CD. Most (if not all) of these demos are available as full versions on this site and it does seem a bit silly to upload a whole CD image when the main feature software was only 2MB.
Release date for the CD version was 1994.
Enjoy!
Yes, that's true. Don't create a new page, don't delete the current floppy version, but
add the CD-ROM version download to this page.
Well, if we have the floppy version already up, don't replace it with CD-ROM version, rather add the CD-ROM version to this page. Don't create another page a la BBEdit.
I think it is save to replace this downloadable file with the CD-ROM version.
CD-ROM version?! Please upload. Ive been looking allover for this, all I have are the original MacPlay floppies for the game and a manual
Do the good deed!
Cheers.
"I have the CD-ROM version of this game..."
Then I hope you will consider uploading it!
I have the CD-ROM version of this game and it does have the certain 'references' that are illegal in certain areas of Europe that you refer to
The Mac version was always my favourite. Better graphics, SFX, BGM and the extra weapons
But I want to kill those fools...
WARNING! This is one of the versions that doesn't have any Nazi in it. Sadly the PC version had Nazi.
I remember playing this on a Windows computer when I was 4 years old. But the Mac-version has the best resolution! I was playing this on Classic. Good quality music, too!
Must be Stuffit
it just say text edit
You need to use an emulator. SheepShaver will work. Or Basilisk II, since this is an old game. Click on "guides" for more info.
i downloaded it and there was just a bunch of jibberish in text edit. did i do something wrong? plz respond
Cool music. I give it 4 stars simply for being Wolfenstein! Technically speaking though it's not that great; certainly not even remotely in the same league as Marathon.
The Mac version always had the best music.
